Exige S1 vs Exige S2

What car will be faster on a circuit where cornering is more important?
How will the S1 vs S2 behave at the limit?
Does anyone know the TopGear laptime for the S1 and S2?

Thanks

I don’t think “Top Gear” test track was invented at the time of the S1. It is difficult to compare as most serious owners don’t keep their cars in standard spec. Even some small changes can have a significant effect lap times.

Like changing the digit after the S from a 1 to a 2

Tim.

Hi Tim, I take it your an S1 Man ? If the S1 came with a more reliable engine I would be with you all the way.

If I could turn back the clock and I knew a couple of years ago what I know now I would have bought an S1 and put in a Honda or Audi unit and made all the other usual mods.

If only !

I like both their looks, allthough i and most people have a tendecy to go for the newer as they look modern and doesn’t come with as much mileage then newer cars.
But when i see the S1, it looks more hardcore and racey to me.

These laptimes come from the vx220 forum…

A few track stats from the german authority, Sport Auto

Nrburgring (power more important)

VXT 8min 34sec
Exige S1 8min 42sec
Exige S2 8min 32 sec
350Z 8min 26sec
S2000 8min 39sec
Mini Cooper S Works 8min 55sec
Porsche 996 8min 17sec
Porsche 997S 8min 05 sec
NSX 8min 38 sec
Gallardo 7min 52sec
F430 F1 7min 55sec
Carrera GT 7min 32sec A whole minute quicker than the Exige S2 Yes please!

Hockenheim (small circuit) (cornering more important)

VXT 1min 17.1sec
Exige S1 1min 14.8sec
Exige S2 1min 16.5sec
350Z 1min 18.8sec
S2000 1min 18.9sec
Mini Cooper S Works 1min 22.2sec
Porsche 996 1min 17.1sec
Porsche 997S 1min 14.3sec
NSX 1min 18.4sec
Gallardo 1min 11.8sec
F430 F1 1.12.7sec
Carrera GT 1min 08.6sec This clearly shows that power and balance is best!

Myself i own a VX220, former car was a honda S2000.
At least a step in the right direction for me.

Problem is most Exiges S1’s & S2’s are not standard. Which suspension did both cars have ? which brakes, which brake pads, which engine Mods on S1 ? (many small and big available) Was S1 standard 170bhp or optional 190bhp ? Ecu on S1 is easily modified. Emerald can get you 10bhp more easily.
Which exhaust system ? etc etc

What i have noticed, now that i have seen the topgear laptime board, is that exige S is not that much faster as the normal exige.
Not even 2 secs faster as the normal exige, and that laptime was on a damp track, the S on a dry!

That’s off coursse why you can’t compare it.
If there aren’t any serious tests done with both the cars in standard form you’ll never know and only assume.

S1

How will the S1 vs S2 behave at the limit?

S2 will be easier to control at the limit. It’s softer, more forgiving and has better suspension design.

Conditions will play too much of a factor for that to be a good comparison. Damp, S2 will probably be quicker because of the ABS. Long straights will play into the S2’s hands too. A standing start also probably helps an S2. Otherwise an S1 has the better track credentials.

You’re also assuming the Stig is always the same, which he isn’t.

The figures you quote are the ones I posted on the VX forum. As I said, Sport Auto is the authority in Germany. They even take the trouble to state if a car is on normal road tyres or “sports” (semi-slicks) as both the S1 and S2 were in their tests.

They tested the S1 in November 2000 and, unfortunately, I haven’t got a copy of that issue to check the exact specification, but they test stock cars unless they state otherwise. Whether that would be 190bhp in Nov. 2000 I don’t know. But the lighter weight of the S1 must have made the difference on this quite twisty circuit.

The track has been slightly changed since 2000, but the consensus is that this doesn’t make any difference to lap times.

For those who don’t know it, here is a video of my old Speedster (VX220) in action on the Hockenheim small circuit it’s good fun

>in-car video Hock.<

But surely this is all fairly irrelevant anyway? If you spent 30k on an Exuge these days you’d either get a slow but newish S2 or an S1 just like the one that just came third in the TurnerGP!

Nordschleife Lap Times (Sport Auto Mag)

Horst von Saurma (D) Lotus Exige, 179 PS, 796 kg, 2000-11-01, sport auto Supertest 20.000 km, 142.069 km/h, 8 42 000

too many variables. Driver being the most significant.

Great video Speedy K
It propably was to much for the silver VX at the end of the video.

Some things are better on the S2 like the suspension design but the lighter weight of the S1 is in it’s advantage.
I have a soft spot more for the S1 becausse it’s lighter.

Which will be quicker on track?

The one with the quicker driver - the biggest variable by far when talking about Elise variants.

That’s why I take no notice of times set in magazines - these are done over the space of a few days if you are lucky. I’d bet even the best drivers will find tenths here and there with experience of the car.

All IMHO of course…
