Anybody got (or know about) the Exige fire extinguisher? [image]http://demo.justwebs.co.uk/ShopPics/BCV/TA111U6079S.jpg[/image] I’ve been rather unsuccessfully trying to find out the size and type (powder, AFFF, etc)?I quite like the look but don’t want it to be useless.Ta, Ian [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif[/image]
IanDon’t know the techie stuff, but IIRC they cost about 90 - yes 90!!!I’ve got a 30ish one in my car, which I bought in Halfords. You could try here too: http://web1933.vs.netbenefit.co.uk/acatalog/
IanThe one I have from Halfords is I think the same as Pesky’s. It a 1Kg powder type in an Aluminium bottle - 39.99If you rub the writing off and then spray it satin black and stick an Exiges.com sticker on it - you have basically the same for half price !! LOL chaps! [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/grin.gif[/image]By the time I’ve taken the Miniman route I think I’ve rather buy the original!I’d prefer a AFFF one as I understand they make less mess than powder (I know, I know, it’s a fire I shouldn’t be worrying!).I just want one that complements my interior.Ian [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif[/image]
I got the one that Geary sells.Don’t know what’s inside, my thought is that if he sells it for our cars, it must be good enough. Looks cool and is only 15 quid.It says no drilling required, but I haven’t figured out how to install it without drilling. Unless he refers to “leave it in the fllor above the footrest” which is what I have done.Uldis
UldisPlease, please firmly secure the extinguisher in your cabin!Otherwise, there is a real danger is that a mobile extinguisher could easily roll under your pedals and stop you braking etc!!!To be safest, drill the floor to fix the bracket into which the unit clips.
"I haven’t figured out how to install it without drilling."Uldis, have fitted same extinguisher in the “corner” at junction of back and side panels to door side of drivers seat. Plenty of heavy duty velcro direct to extinguisher body. Pesky is spot on, but think you will find the above extremely secure. Course it’s going to need a decent tug in the event of the unthinkable…
Hi Guys,A couple of points on this one.If you plan to do any sprinting or hill climbs with the car the Motor Sports Association scrutineer will insist on the following:If you use a “small hand held system” the thing must contain at least 1.5 Kg of BCF or 1.75 Kg of AFFF. For a plumbed in system you can also use 2.25 Kg of Zero2000. BCF extinguishers can no longer be bought (BCF contains halons which are no longer manufactured) and will probably be banned soon. Even a small hand held system must be fitted securely to the car by at least 2x 6mm bolts.Best advice is, therefore, to buy a 1.5 Kg AFFF extinguisher and securely fit it to the car. A friend of mine who sprints regularly in his Elise has achieved this without drilling holes in the car. What he has done is secure a piece of plywood (probably at least 5ply I guess)to the bottom of the passenger seat. This sticks out in front of the seat just far enough to secure the extinguisher. With a passenger it is therefore below his knees. Without a passenger it is readily accessible to the driver or rescuer! This arrangement seems to satisfy the scrutineers and avoids drilling the car.HTHMike[This message has been edited by 83man (edited 22 October 2002).]
83man,I’ve been trying to find out the relative benefits of Powder vs AFFF. None of my Google searches turn up anything straightforward. Can you help?I’m aware AFFF is foam but is it any better than Powder? Any easier to clean up (I know it’s a fire and I shouldn’t really worry about that)? I understand the MSA prefer it, know why? Thanks, Ian [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif[/image]
Ian,Booth foam and powder act as 'smotherers’Powder tends to have an instant effect but doesn’t ‘flow’ as well as foam which is therefore much better on fuel fires, particularly those that are a wide puddle such as would occur if a fuel tank is broached in an accident…Not sure which is easier to clean up though…RegardsMike
Pesky, Steve, don’t worry, It hasn’t been there for any trackday. I just got it in time for my long journey (remember? I’m still in Italy and driving back this Friday).I am definitely going to secure it properly.I’ll bear in mind the tips.Cheers,Uldis(not taking the Frejus tunnel this time!)
Thanks 83manUldis, as a quick fix, will it fit under the foot rest? (only held on by velcro)Ian [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif[/image][This message has been edited by IDG (edited 23 October 2002).]
I’m not sure you need a fire extinguisher for sprinting. The “Blue Book” has fire extinguisher as only recommended - you wont fail scrutineering if you dont have one. - I’ve done a few sprints in the Exige now ( including a new class record at Curborough by the way. ahem … [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif[/image] ) and without any extinguisher.

B]True, but a lot of organising clubs say in their regs that fire extinguishers are to be carried so I guess it depends who is running the event. I think the advice is relevant though to anyone who is planning to fit an extinguisher to their car because if they fit the wrong one then the MSA scrutineer will insist…RegardsMike[This message has been edited by 83man (edited 23 October 2002).]
MikeAgreed / some clubs or at least the scrutineers they choose can have a different approach and then you have to argue !! Rob my time was 36,27 in Roadgoing / Sportcars 1400/2000cc. A well driven 1700 Caterham got a 34.51 and Westfield with at least 250 hp and slicks the low 30s and beleive me thats quick. I could get my Mini to low 34s so I was quite happy with the time, reckon I could get into the 35s but I want to keep the clutch and me working ! A closer ratio box woold help along with a LSD and a few more horses and … hang on I bought this for track days !!! [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif[/image]
Good onyer miniman [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/cool.gif[/image] [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/grin.gif[/image]
FYI, I picked up a (powder) Flamebeater (as sold by Geary) at the motorshow and fitted it inbetween the seats using heavy duty Velcro. It can be reached by the driver whilst straped in.Uldis, as a quick fix, it will fit under the passenger foot rest.I’ll probably go for something a little more thorough but wanted something for Silverstone on Thursday while I investgated.Ian [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif[/image]
Ian,didn’t connect until now.I had it for the journey on top of the footrest, in the small inclined space. It was fairly unmovable, but then, I still had a big bag over it (to use it, I would have had to take the big bag out [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/rolleyes.gif[/image] )Now I will see if I put it to the right of the drivers seat, the left of the passenger, or in between.Question: how did you fit the velcro? mine has an aluminum cage that has two eyelets in the middle, but no flat surface. Did you screw on to the eyelets a small flat surface?Or you just used lots of it hoping it’s ok?Uldis
