Exhaust setup a bit iffy for Brands

All,

Got the Elise Parts 4" silenced decat fitted this weekend, with the help of Tim from Lakeside given I couldn’t shift those rusty bolts!

When we started the car up it sounded softer so we were both expecting a reasonable db reading. The exhaust system had cooled down somewhat by the time we did the db test, but the results were 97.5db on the 0-100db sensitivity setting, and 103db on the 60-130db setting. Ngg!!

So, given the car was cold, how much generally can dbs go down by once an exhaust system is warmed through? …also if anyone cares to comment on Brands Hatch and noise strictness, as I’m due at the LoT evening session there next week and the max level is 101db? :astonished:

Cheers

PS: On the plus side, the pops and bangs are back with a vengeance on the overrun

Don’t exhausts get quieter when they warm through because the cat gets up to temp? And you haven’t got a cat?
I think they only do static tests and everyone knows that k-series only rev to 6k . Also try keeping the clutch down and taking the revs up to the max (and no further!) slowly. You could also bung some wire wool up although this will blow out on the sighting laps rather obviously if you dont pull it out after the test.

You could just put the cat back in to be on the safe side? The noise testers are a law unto themselves and usually seem to stick the tester right up your exhaust pipe  I think i’ve had everything from 86dB to 113db at different places.

Ah, that’s interesting! I didn’t realise the warmth aspect related to the CAT only?! :astonished: Also, worth asking, but without my rear diffuser on, would that have made the reading worse (realising most noise comes from the exit point, but the noise off the actual boxes underneath may be subdued somewhat once the diffuser is back in situ? …yes, I know …I feel I’m groping out into the darkness for some hope here, before having to take the pipe off  :astonished:

Nick I am definitely going to be in front of you this time.dont want your old Brillo pads launching themselves at me going round Paddock…

Hi Nick, Clive I’m at Brands next Wednesday too. Will be good to meet you guys and looking forward to driving Brands.
Cheers
Alex

Anyone know the exact settings they use on a db meter to give the static result???

High - Low
Fast - Slow

As I have got a meter, but get a mixture of results between 100 - 101db. Got a feeling that a large amount of the extra volue comes from the Cup air box

PMSL
Clive, I’ll use whatever tricks I can mate

Alex, yes it will be good to catch up…please pop over and say hi.

Only 4 more sleeps!

Did you manage to pass the noise test in the end? I didn’t see your car there, but admittedly was a bit tired so wasn’t paying much attention.
Thanks to Clive for letting me follow him to learn the lines.

Hi Clive/Nick
Good to meet you guys yesterday, pleased the rain held off and the cars ran well, hope you both had pleasurable journeys home.
Hopefully see you again on a trackday soon.
Cheers
Alex

Neil C - what car were you driving?

I was in the red S2. The extra weight was rather telling though, I had a hell of a time keeping up with the S1’s/2-11’s round the sharper corners.

Were you the one that caught us tucking into sausage rolls from the nearest garage afterwards  ?
Alex

Neil NONE of us can keep up with the 2-11’s
When are you guys on track next??
Have fun

Thinking about the Silverstone evening on the 28th July - just a bit worried about the 98db static noise though!

Belated response…

Yes, passed the noise test in the end. My car was only revving to 6,000 on the day,  but even so, still did 103db at 4,000!

My wife joined me for one session. There was a lot of begging, pleading and crying, but I think in the end she enjoyed it  Her favourite was the first corner into Paddock.

Car ran well, Clive and I did some good sessions together… Clive how did the videos come out, any good?

There were a few slower ones that day (must have been running them in), they were handy to follow as people moved out the way for them you could follow them through.
No trackdays for me till Donny next month as i’m both knackered and skint.
