Exhaust Options!

Hi all, just wanted to gauge your opinions on options for my Exige S1 in the exhaust department!

Just to put those that haven’t seen my previous posts - I went to the recent track day at Croft and wasn’t allowed to go on due to a 116db at 6000rpm, tested again at 4500rpm but it was still 105db…the limit was 85 or so!

My car is currently at Lotus Newcastle being looked at and the news is that I have a 340R Manifold leading straight through to a Janspeed back box…no Cat…no wonder it was noisy!!

They have suggested I fit a Hangar111 Sports Cat for £399 fitted.

Does anybody have any ideas about what else I could go for, maybe different Cat option? I need to be able to use the car on the roads but really would like to have the highest performance possible as it is a track car.

Any help will be most appreciated.

Cheers,

Rich

Before you make a decision, get them to knock on the silencer with something metal. If it’s a dull thud, then its not in bad condition, if it’s a very metallic, tinny sound, then its probably a completely empty can - I’m betting on this. Janspeed used to repack them, but it takes a while. Sports cats don’t offer much in the way of silencing in my experience.

Or go exhaust shopping!!

Didn’t think of that, thanks JDS, will get them knocking on it tomorrow! I’ve read a few posts on a different forum (not Lotus) about Janspeed boxes giving up after a relatively short time so why not mine!

Don’t fancy paying out for a new system really but out of interest what are people running on theirs?

Changed loads of the Janspeed ones, especially the Exige ones with the single oval tip and the box offset to the drivers side. Gases go into a box, hit a dead end, turn 180 degrees and out a different pipe, no wonder really.

There’s loads of options, but ideally you want one that is repackable so if it happens again you don’t need to send off and wait while its away.

Yep, that’s the type I’ve got!

I’ll ask them about it tomorrow and see what condition the silencer is in and go from there!

I have a standard s1 exige rest box and pipes. Hardly used. It will be quiet.

Had similar issues with mine, 106db but again running a decat. Went to Jim at 2bular and what a top man, very nice conversation and great advice. Beautiful piece of work and perfect fit. Passed a Brands road car evening noise test still running the decat. No resonance but still a great sound when pressing on.

JDS - spoke to Chris at Lotus Newcastle and he says that the silencer is fine and dandy, told him to order the Cat and fit that and see what it’s like.

Winthattt - think I’d rather go down the updated exhaust route but thanks for the offer.

Gulfb - 2bular based near Aberdeen, did you actually go up there to chat or just over the phone? Tried looking at the website but there isn’t much info on there, I’ve heard very good things about their exhausts…just need to know how much it would cost, your results sound perfect…got any pics?!

Sounds good, let us know how you get on.

Stupidly didn’t take a pic before we fitted it, as it arrived the morning of the track day…
Only spoke to Jim but explained my problem and I wanted and his suggestion was spot on. Wanted to keep the weight down so it has a single tail pipe. Happy to take some pictures at the weekend. Really give Jim a call you won’t be disappointed.

JDS - Will do

Gulfb - sounds like a cracking result for you, will give Jim a ring tomorrow and see what he says. Would love to see some pics if its not too much hassle?

I have Janspeed twin pipe with cat. Not had a problem track day noise-wise. It’s changed tone in recent months so think it might be on way out(after 8 years, 3/4000 miles a year). A 2ubular would be my choice of replacement.
Curiously, when I had a cat by-pass fitted briefly, I developed a slight misfire at 3000/3500 revs. Removal of decat solved that

A silenced de-cat pipe does it for me. For extra noise reduction on track, I temporarily fit a super trap. That seems to do the trick.

Eliseparts silenced decat pipe works well with Larini back box on mine and boosts mid-range.
