Exhaust heat wrap ?

I just want to know your opinion on the exhaust heat wrap.
Is it necessary thing to do with our 4-2-1 exhaust manifolds?
Are there any disadvantages of this thing fitted?
Thanks!

A real pain to wind on , for minimal gain IMHO

Yep, quite a fiddle to fit on 4-2-1 manifolds for little return in terms of power gains etc. It has a massive benefit of keeping all that heat out of all sorts of other components though. It also needs to be redone relatively often.

Ceramic coatings like Zircotec do the same job but require less upkeep over time, only problem being that it is far more expensive initially.

Thanks for your replies. Yup it’s gonna be a tricky thing to do, but at least I’ll try to do it. So sad I live far from civilized world and we don’t have Zircotec here.

The spray on coating makes the wrap last quite a lot longer too…

Azrael, thanks for the link.
We have this paint for sale here.
But should I paint the exhaust manifold before fitting the heat wrap or should I paint the wrap when fitted?

Paint the wrap once fitted.

Once it starts to degrade, it’s a bugger - you end up with a thick furry coating over just about everything.

I don’t think you can fit too many metal bands as once it starts to unravel it goes really quickly.

Why wrap ?
Curious

I was concerned about heat off the manifold - in terms of the alternator (having fried one previously); and also heat sink into the cabin via the rear bulkhead.

With undertrays fitted it does get very hot underneath the car and so anything that can help manage the heat should be a good thing.

I know it can also have beneficial effects (or at least is supposed so) to the actual exhaust gas flow but this was not really a concern of mine.
