Now, can someone please explain why when the car is on the hoist and you rotate one wheel forwards, the opposite wheel goes backwards!
Because the crown wheel & pinion don’t rotate when you turn one wheel by hand. It’s caused by the rotation of the planetary gears - the bevel gear attached to the driveshaft of the rotated wheel turns the floating gears which then turn the other wheel’s bevel gear in the opposite direction.
