Ever run yours without its rear wing???

I’ve just removed the wing to help give better access when fitting the Jenvey’s and quite like the look (maybe because it looks different, cleaner). Has anyone run without the wing and does it have a negative effect in the real (road) world?

Ta,
Kurt

Well Pesky reckons It’s not ‘really’ attached to the car anyhow …so it shouldn’t make any difference !

I run my S2 without one on the road and quite like the look tbh…

This is the S1 section mate, where the wing does work.

Yes indeedy! About 100kg of downforce if I remember rightly…and as the front splitter is designed to for aero balance then that’ll be all to cock, too

100 kg …
Cool , about 10% of the force needed for 1G …

Wings and loading of 0.1 G are minuscule in the downforce realm…

Over 80 ish mph ,then yes ,aero will play an ever increasing part …
BUT ,your aero will eat your HP faster than Pesky can supp gravy…

Air is HEAVY stuff !.. 1.2 kilo per m3 …
Ok not much I hear ??
Try having it hit you at 100 Mph !

The reasoning behind my ranting is that with our cars aero is very very small due to the rear wing …
The venturi UNDER the car is , however , significant.

I love talking air stuff ,so I welcome all posts ,good or bad …Missing Pete 757 on this one …

pics please kurt…

sorry for lurking in the s1 section…

Agree with the above to a degree. Its as much about getting rid of lift, as increasing downforce. Downforce squares with speed. Downforce and aero drag are not related. Balance is more important than total figure. Venturi effect under the car is minimal, we’re all running to high off the ground and the platform not stable enough. Wing on an S1 does lots, next time you’re passing I’ll show you what happens to inner wing pylons at speed.

Love it Jds !
Your postings are ,as always , highly accurate …
Infact ,surprisingly so for a 'land lubber ’

Just to add …
I think venturi on undertray is crucial to s1 grip …
… just my view

Ride height & curved sill panels mean that any appreciable low pressure under the car will soon be filled; diffuser will simply tidy up airflow around the rear end.

There’s also the question that if there’s any low pressure remaining, then the two Naca ducts in the engine undertray are something of an anomaly as they’re located to bring air in, which clearly they wouldn’t unless the engine bay is at even lower pressure…

…oh and the engine bay sides are open immediately above the diffuser - into the rear arches, which are likely to be at high pressure - so it’s unlikely the bay’s going to be low pressure…well that and the side/roof intakes that also direct an amount of air in.

As above, the rear wing is about aero balance, therefore stability, not total downforce and running without it is going to affect that stability.

but you wear

Totally agree, and believe it makes the Exige easier to drive at track speeds than an Elise; but answering the original poster’s question:

[color:#FF0000]does it have a negative effect in the real (road) world?

[/color]

I’d have to answer no based on effect only really happening at 60 to 100mph.

I had some bends on the A5 last night as speeds in that range that I was glad of a nice balance.

I ran with some extra aero for the first time on Friday and it certainly makes a difference on fast corners.

I span trying to take Anglesey’s Church corner flat last year and this year it was easily flat once I overcame the fear of spinning off into the sea.

It also seemed to be much more stable under heavy braking from high speed.

What were you in Phil? Are you saying you didn’t brake or lift for Church? Your aero must have been much greater than your power.

I was just lifting as my 200bhp hadn’t got me to a speed that needed much more, most broke, and I didn’t nail it until I was sure of my line or needed to quell some understeer. I was seeing about 90mph, similar to Christian’s uber-car.

Ian

Depends which exact bit of the back straight you class as “Church” I think Phil means the final clipping point before the heavy breaking into the Rocket hairpin! If not, he was only running 55bhp in his dieselmobile

Haha I was in my diesel powered smoke blower that was generating the smell of burnt fried food from vegetable oil fuel all around the track…

I can only reach about 90mph into Church from the banking, I dont know what power mine puts out but in comparison it is about identical to Marcp’s 160bhp s2 Elise in a straight line.

Theoretically it puts out 220+ bhp when running properly but because of the inconsistency of its power output and short gears it is hard work. One day it will run 30psi and rev cleanly to 5500rpm the next its over boosting and running 21psi and not wanting to rev cleanly. I am not too concerned about sorting it because I am building a new 16v 2 litre engine and twin turbo setup.

Phil - got a good little bit of GoPro footage following you for a while and it appeared to be going pretty well from where I was sitting - black smoke appeared to be coming from your rear offside tyre and other than the colour made it look like you were lighting up your tyres under acceleration
