Engine temp

I have just purchased an Exige and have found that the engine temp will not go much above 50 on the open road and about 75 max in town. I suspect that the thermostat has been removed. Is this a specical part or will I get one from Halfords? Also what temperature should the car run at?

mine run at 79>80 all day long
even on trackdays

First of all welcome to the fold…the manual reckons the fan kicks in at 104C, anything over 110C needs monitoring as the cooling system has a boiling point of over 120C.

simple check: let it idle until it gets to >105 or the fan kicks in. if the fan starts at a much lower temp, it is probably a (blue) temp sender fault.

In 190 spec temp should be around 82C, & in 177 spec around 90C.

I suspect you have a dodgy temp sensor, rather than no thermostat at all.

Cheers the car is 190 spec. But as the temp changes by 25 deg it apears to not be controlling the temp. I would expect a faulty sensor to read the same incorrect value at all times once the car is warm. The car appears to be very sluggish when reading is at 50 deg with an improvement at 75 deg.

I can see no reason for anyone to remove the thermostat, after all it’s not just a five minute job. It may of course have failed in an open position, I seem to remember Uldis might have had this problem. A check you could do is start the engine up from cold, does the radiator get warm as the engine warms up, if so it could be a defective thermostat. For information it takes about ten minutes for my engine to get warm enough for the thermostat to open when left idling.

Easy to diagnose, as my thermostat had gone soft and basically it opened very early.
Driving along the temp would be between 48 and 60 degC
But in traffic it would go above 90, no problem, and the fan would kick in as before.

If at idle (for a while) you hear the fan coming on but the temp stays very low it would mean only a duff sensor.

i’d suspect a faulty thermostat at this stage and agree with Dave that you might be able to check this by starting from cold and holding the water pipes/radiator at front of car to see if they get warm before your temp guage reached about 80C

My std 177 car runs at 82C on the stack.
