Engine pressureising itself!

the dipstick keeps releasing itself…thought it was just my absentmindedness…but No it happened 2…3 times @ Snetterton today. Sump not overfilled but plenty of oil spray from dipstick outlet
So what do you K experts think

I don’t know the K-series intimately, but I wonder if the breather system is blocked and/or whether the engine is breathing particularly heavily?

You are getting pressure in the crank case. This is usually caused by blow by past the pistons, although can be caused by head gasket failure. Either way it isn’t good.

All true, but I still wouldn’t discount a breather blockage as a first (and easier/cheaper) port of call!

A compression or (even better) a leak check would probably rule out more severe problems, if you have access to the kit.

Will check now…but as Doni looks as if its going to be wet it will be a little easier on the engine…

Clive,

I cannot remember your set-up, but does the two into one vent pipe you made to have running into your catch tank… does the tank then have a vent pipe running OUT too?

If not, or if it is blocked it will of course pressurise and the only way out will be ‘pop’!

Hope you can get it sorted… perhaps soon!

Sorry you missed Anglesey! A SUPER day in every respect.

Hi Pete…yes the vent pipes work Ok and there is an OUT pipe on the /tank…Its amazing how fumy the car is when running in a closed environment…proving the original recovery system worked and that there is flow through the tank.
The “dipstick” problem was happening long before I changed the Venting. I experianced mysterious oil leaks but never found the source, At snett I carefully checked before a run and still it popped.
Have made up Spring retainer for Doni to double check.
No doubt i will be given plenty of advice at the show.##
Cheers

red face :mad:or read herring :astonished:??
Scientific tests at Doni with several independant whitnesses proved that if dipstick is fitted with new “O” ring, carefully replaced into the tube and THE SUMP OIL LEVEL IS CORRECT even afull day of sessions did NOT dislodge the stick but did produce a small amount of oil on the undertray from unknown source…so we are getting there…
