Engine fluffs when I press the accelerator ?????

I asked my dealer to refix the sticking throttle problem… Will I ever learn ??

When I went to pick it up, after it had supposedly had a road test, the technician and workshop manager were not there… So I took it home…

Hardly wanted to go at all… When you press the accelerator it coughs, farts and bangs, almost dies, and then takes off like appollo nine on lift off…

The whole linkage was poorly adjusted - make that not adjusted at all, really… Full of slack and tight as hell.

Once home, I followed the proper procedure to set it up, i.e.

  1. set the throttle height (upstop) 3o mm below the brake
  2. set the ball jointed pull rod to allow 20 mm between cable plate and pivoting link end plate
  3. adjust slack at the engine end
  4. adjust pedal downstop to just achieve full throttle

I also slackened off the pivot bolt, which seemed to have been done up by Arnie Schwarzenegger !!

This made the whole thing work much better with no slack and I do have full throttle, testing this single handed using the broomstick cheat…

Still running terrible though, so I next turned my attention to the Emerald…

Maybe the throttle pot position sensor needs resetting, I thought…

So I connected it up and ran through the reset procedure, and STILL it runs badly… (the Emerald is defo getting the TP signal and correctly allocating load site info)

So what do I try next???

HELP !!!

PS I’m going to video the car starting up and trying to rev, and will take this to Dony today, if anyone wants to see to aid diagnosis…

Air leak ?

Mike
I am not very good with engines but…
Sounds like clean the plugs??
Tony

Bet the butterflys are not balanced, got an air flow meter?

Thanks for the ideas…

I don’t have an airflow meter, but perhaps its time to get one…

I’ll also check the plugs and make sure they connected up the pipes where I removed the IACV etc…

Failing that it probably is time for my usual pilgrimage to Dave Andrews

I do

you could try a bit of pipe and see if you can hear a difference in the “suck” noise in each tract as a starter … if its very different you know what to do !!

We checked that the throttles are opening with the airbox off and all seems OK…

Plugs were black, but with all that popping and blowing I didn’t expect anything else… (We cleaned them)

No red pipes so there were no lean cylinders…

Rechecked that the throttle position sensor was correctly loaded into the Emerald…

Next step is to balance the airflow…

Phil - it would be nice to borrow yours, but the distance is a bit of a problemo…

Can I buy one locally - after all it is obviously a useful bit of kit…

Or I could try the dealer, who should have one I suppose, but common sense tells me that I should stay away from them, cos this is the second time they have b#gg#r#d it up !!

Demon Theives would have you one next day Mike ?

Yes - it’s called a synchrometer…

Yes - it’s called a synchrometer…

Glad you found it Mike, i’ll put mine back in the drawer then

Ordered today and delivered tomorrow, hopefully…

Thanks for the offer Phil - I might need teledirections on how to use it though !!

No worries, but i’m sure you’ll get on with it fine

Thanks for the offer Phil - I might need teledirections on how to use it though !!

Thanks Rob…

Any clues on finding the right screw and turning in the appropriate direction ??

Well how is it - are you still on the test drive

Sorry - I got called around to help a friend move furniture…

Update for our readers - the synchrometer read 5.25 on cylinders 1 and 2, and 3.25 on 3 and 4…

A few turns of the screw got it to 6, 6, 4.5 and 5, which is much better…

I think what was happening was that three and four had way too little air at idle, and when I started to accelerate, the emerald is throwing an initial extra fueling which caused a way too rich mixture and caused those two cylinders to misfire and ‘die’…

Car seems much better, no fluffing, and it idles strongly and practicing my heel and toe technique it revs up nicely…

Tomorrow I will put the airbox back on and give it a proper road test…

Well, it don’t go in the rain from cold…

Tomorrow it will be light and dry and I’ll have another go…

OK - Smokin !!!

Took about ten minutes to balance the throttle bodies, by undoing the six mm lock nut directly in line with the throttle cable, and adjusting the grub screw accessed down the centre of the lock nut with a small allen key…

Test each body with my new synchrometer, and tweak again until the readings are more or less level at around 5 kg/h…

Retighten locknut, and then use the other screw adjuster just to the side of the locknut to adjust the overall idle…

Retest just in case…

Airbox back on, and test drive…

Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god,

I forgot just how fast this car is

I now have instant throttle response, and am most of the time afraid to press the pedal all the way

This might have something to do with the suitability of my 600 and 650 lb springs for the country road I was testing on
