Engine cutting out at idle

Hi all,

My car has decided to start cutting out a few seconds after idling. I can stop it from cutting out if i give the accelerator pedal a prod when i’m rolling up to juntions, etc but even then once the revs have dropped back down to idle after a few seconds it will cut out. It only does this when warm, from cold it will idle ok. I’ve had the ECU checked for fault codes (nothing to report) and the MAF readings are fine.

Any ideas guys? any help much appreciated.

A similar symptom I had with a 111R turned out to be a broken valve spring :frowning:

Hey Whitey
I have a similar problem when hot usually dropping out form 2nd or 3rd gear, need to rev to save it . I’ve narrowed it down to an exhaust leak which Jim’s going to fix later in the year. Not sure about the ECU tho. So it could be that, or an induction leak maybe your IAVC which you could try cleaning out with some Carber. Anyway try this as well from Seloc… Clicky Here
Junks is right in that thread about posting something up on Teckwiki, it’s a [color:#FF0000]FECKER  [/color] of a problem to find :frowning:

Good luck  How’s the car besides?

Cheers for the replies. It’s been great to have the car back after my deer incident altho only had it 48 hrs and it’s been in the garage having uprated engine and gearbox mounts fitted along with engine and gearbox oil being changed (Silkolene fully synthetic and MT90). I still need to sort the suspension and then start taking it to some track days and meet some of u lot.

This stalling problem sounds like it’s going to be a fecker to sort. Think I’ll try the 02 sensor and check the airbox fitment 1st before checking anything else.

Wheel speed sensor ?

air leak

My car does exactly the same and has always done this since Ive owned the car. Quite common for to stall when approaching junction, so Ive sort of used to the signs of when its about the stall ready to give it a quick blip of the throttle.

I was led to believe that most Exiges do this (lotus did a reflash for the problem), but the higher power tune exaggerates the problem - Would love to know if there is a solution because it is annoying…

Had similar and was caused by an air leak on one of the small vacuum hoses. Mine still does stall sometimes rather than all the time.

Mine doesn’t do it all the time, but its is annoying though.

Forgot to add - idles is fine, the stalling is only when slowing down to stop at junctions.

Fixed. My back box was blowing ('cos i fitted it!).

Can’t believe something so minor caused it to cut out at every junction…fussy motor.

I get that nearly all the time. I put it down to onions :astonished:

Bugger! my car has just starting to do this when slowing down after being perfect for two years.
I cant see the exhaust blowing but the TRD air box clips keep letting go and it pops open , could it be this ?

Well my trd box was also loose, fixed it the same time as my back box so can’t say for sure which offending item was more to blame for the stalling, sorry.

Did it also feel like you had lost a few HP and a bit lumpy at low revs ? This started a few days before the intercooler was fitted so I’m sure it’s not that .
I did also notice that the sensor that fits on the intercooler had an oily film on it and where it had been fitted , I didn’t try cleaning it because I didn’t know how fragile it was .

No feeling of loss of power and mines always been lumpy at idle. Sorry. Maybe you’re best off just going over everything to make sure all is tight and securely fitted. These cars throw a strop over the smallest things.

Well I spent most of the weekend under my car trying to find the problem , I changed the de-cat back to the sport cat and put a new TRD filter in when I was under there , I cant see the exhaust blowing anywhere , the TRD box fit is rubbish and I can’t get it to close tight but it must of always been like that . The stalling is everytime I slow down to stop now. Looks like it’s a trip back to Sincs !

have you checked all the jubilee clips on the inlet pipes? I replaced all of mine as the Lotus ones are shockingly bad at staying done up :frowning:

My car cuts out too slowing to junctions, but was always told this was ‘normal’. Think I need to check the the TRD box and all the jubilee clips.

I doesn’t stall all the time, but seems to worst when its hot (sitting in traffic) and if I stop at a junction with some urgency.

Yeah I checked them as I had to take the intercooler off again to take the heatshield off to get to the left hand side intercooler pipe so I could take it off to get to the far side TRD box clip , f***ing thing , also the wheelarch liner out to get the filter in , need to get the VIS one fitted so I can get to the filter just in the side pod.
What clips did you use? The ABA ones from demon tweaks look good with the smooth insert.

When you fitted the bulkhead side of the TRD box , did you bend the original bracket to fit the out of place bolt mounting of the TRD box? Otherwise the bulkhead side will be slightly curved and will be wanting to pop the back box off.
