Elvington Report

It was the first proper outing for the GT2 yesterday. Despite my prayers for lots of rain, we only had 15 minutes or so of damp track… oh well.Having almost “sussed” the handling of the Skyline, I tried to carry those skills over to the GT2… and promptly span a good 360 degrees at the first corner. DOH !The Skyline required a good bootful to get the backend out before it got wise and switched to 4WD mode, saving you from a spin. The GT2 has none of those face-saving, hero-making features and won’t recover you from crazy angles so long as you keep your foot down… Hmm, this was going to be trickier than I thought… Still, if it had been as easy, I guess I would have been disappointed, because learning (particularly steep learning !) is lots of fun.Giving the car a bootful mid-corner aside, the car is simply phenomenal, which prodigious cornering grip (although I didn’t explore this too much, as Elvington is famed for really chewing tyres through the corners). As for straight line peformance is concerned, it’s almost silly fast, reeling in everything as if they’re all on cool-down laps, yet it does so quietly and without fuss or drama. Making it an excellent road car, as well as track car.Overall, I’m very happy with it, and see lots more learning to come, which I’m looking forward to.Here’s a short movie clip of some silly antics in the GT2http://www.exiges.com/gallery/porsche/elvington.wmv Many thanks go to resident beardie Steve Green, who spared much of his track day to help Brian identify a burst hose on his 5ltr Merc beastie, and getting him up + running again. Thanks for the spare oil too Steve !!Exit, stage left! Yup… many thanks Steve!! Was a bit worried until you spotted that burst hose. :-)First (and last!?) time I’ve taken the Merc out on track. On the sighting lap I was a bit unnerved. It was a bit too serene inside, and didnt want to turn all that well around the hairpins. The brakes seemed not up to the job either, but after a few laps, the brakes gained a lot of bite. Cornering on the highspeed corners was ok, you just had to be smooth as the soft suspension meant a lot of weight transfer. It was easy to fling it around the hair pins… just use a fair amount of throttle and slide it round…: [image]http://www.bookatrack.com/g2/juansolo/367/640.3881.500SLUberBarge-5.jpg[/image] Power was amusing. Whilst not as fast as Davids tweaked beetle, or the bike engined 7’s it did seem to reel in the other cars on the straights, but then I’d hold them up in the corners, so I just cruised down the straights after a while.Had a heater hose burst and make a huge cloud of steam. Many thanks again to Steve for helping out there.Steve, you need to post a photo of your tyre! Bri

How about this piccy ![image]http://www.bookatrack.com/g2/jnewnam/342/640.3543.153-5363_IMG.jpg[/image]

Thats a better one, ta ;-)I’ve named that move the Sindelfingen flick :stuck_out_tongue: Bri

Brian - love the description of a “tweaked beetle” spent a little time in the passenger seat but don’t remember the vase and flower…guess David hid that. I hope that its not the last time on the track for the merc…I was quite impressed when watching it and if there had been more time would have liked a ride in it…I didn’t believe it when David asked for oil as I thought he would never know how to check it…and I wasn’t let down…all i can say is that computers do too much…not sure if virtual dipstick refers to the car or the driver!Brian - what tyre…Kwit Fit have decided to keep it as a training aid and say that it only just qualifies to be called one…pic to follow…

'tis a monster of a car, though I can now see why all POW’s are SLJ’s [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/rolleyes.gif[/image] AndyBookaTrack.com

Pff… the car was rarely anything but sideways !

You are more than welcome to have a ride. Hopefully all the hoses will stay intact this time!! Bri
