Electrical problems in my Exige S MY10

I took delivery of a new Exige S just before Christmas.

Things have been going wonderfully until today.

The following symptoms can be described …

The speedometer and rev counter are not lit.
The small LCD display, showing KMs etc, is lit.
The small LCD display is permanently on. It does not turn off after the key has been removed or the alarm set.
The handbrake, indicators and rev limiter lights all work as expected.
When the main lights are turned on, the small LCD display dims … this is normal behaviour.
The interior light, behind the driver’s shoulder, works as expected.

However I still have no main light on in the instrumentation binnacle and therefore would not be able to see my speed at night.

I’m not sure if it’s related but I include it to help out.
Thursday last week I couldn’t turn the stereo on, no matter what I did. The next day it worked.

Finally, since yesterday i’ve been unable to put the steering lock onthe car. it just doesn’t click when I turn the wheel.

If anyone has any advice it’s much appreciated.

It’s a Euro car, bought in Germany and I am still awaiting my English manuals to appear.

Could it be a simple fuse or bulb ?

Regards.

PS My dealer is still on his Christmas break !

There is a known problem with the instrument binnacle now and again. I had a 2009 Exige S and all the instruments and warning lights on that stopped work last Sept. The whole instrument binnacle had to be replaced. In addition the lights on the heater and A/C panel also gave up at the same time.

Can’t see how the steering lock is connected though as that is just a mechanical lock on the steering column.

Give it back to the dealer when he opens.

The steering lock is odd, if the key is not removed from the steering column even if the ignition is off the stereo stays on, so the lock not coming on might be part of you issues, but certainly not all

Sounds like the instrumnet binnacle to me.

And i’ve realised the light for the heater / ac panel doesn’t work.

Neither does the warning noise when I leave the lights on. Surely this is just a fuse and not the whole binnacle failing !?

I thought at first it was a fuse but none of them had blown so I took it to a dealer who diagnosed the instrument binnacle. Had it changed under warranty. Still a pain in the backside as the dealer was 100 miles away and none of the instruments were working, speedo, rev counter, fuel gauge the lot.

My dials work … they just don’t light up.

Anyway, am going to check the fuses later today and see what gives.

My dealer is 200Kms away also. I wouldn’t mind so much but it’s going for the import inspection on Monday morning and knowing the Swiss, they’ll fail it if the orange of the indicator is not the exact tone of orange specified in the rulebook

Let’s hope she passes then my dealer sorts me out.

With your repair under warranty, did you have to pay out anything ? Wondering if they charged you for labour.

Didn’t charge for anything, just changed all the bits that were required.

Okay … part of the problem solved .

The lock in the steering column twists and pushes in as you turn the key. As it does so, it triggers the LED display to turn on.

After playing around today I managed to figure out that it was just poor assembly with the steering column which was causing the steering lock and constant LED issue.

Unfortunately, i’ve not been able to fix the problem with the lack of backlight in the binnacle or at the heaters. I disconnected the battery to give it a CTRL-ALT-DEL … then checked the fuses. They seem okay so it will have to go to the dealer for a proper inspection.

Still, glad the LED is now turning off
