Ecu

Where is it?

Seems a dumb question but where is the thing. I’ve been led to believe behind the passenger seat. So seat out to gain access?

I thought it is on the bulkhead in the engine bay? Not had one for a while, so I could be hopelessly wrong…

Mmm nowhere obvious I can see. The bulkhead has thick sound deadening attached, expansion bottle at one end and alternator at the other.

The OBD port is located between the seats at shoulder height so it’s gotta be close by!

Okay excuse my laziness - I’ve found it. Indeed it sits behind the passenger seat and visible to the right hand side of the OBD port.

Next question, what ecu should be in there?

Either the original ECU in a sort of square bronze coloured anodized enclosure with a large multiway connector on one side, or an aftermarket (and better mapped) Emerald or something else!

To gain full access, the best way is seats out and remove plastic bulkhead trim panel containing the speakers.

Quite correct except mine is a dull grey/green colour, made by Efi I think. Amazingly the obd port works and sends a few codes.

If by any chance you want and emerald with an adaptor loom i know someone who has one for sale … me.

Mmm mine has a Lotus sticker on it saying 340R with a homologation number.

Can you post a picture?

Sounds pretty nromal. The Exige S1 and the 340R share the same VHPD engine and motormanagement system. On my ECU ‘340R’ is written by hand too.
According to Marten, the dutch seler of my car, it is written on many or all Exige S1 ECUs.

Here is what mine looked like before I sold it many years ago…

I believe the file reference written on it was to do with a misfire reflash which cars should have had.

The double sided tape residue is from where the vehicle alarm microwave module was stuck to it.

Sorry I deleted the photo. It was a Lotus sticker with the 340r homologation number.

Mine a 190.

Is there any way to tell the difference between a 177 and 190 ECU?

Only I have a unit I bought a while ago for my ‘spares’ shelf that has 190 written on in pencil (though not by me)…

I think some have 190 written on them. Mine does not but the car got 188 on the dyno. Mine is also a different colour. I expect that means you cannot be sure but it’s likely to be a 190.
