The S1 Exige is made entirely out of pig iron and has the engine out of an MGF. Suspension is courtesy of rusty bed springs
The S1 is more track focused than the S2 and is a lot less practical (no boot space at all with an S1)
There can also be issues with the VHPD engine but there are loads and loads more people on here more qualified to give you opinions than me.
I have an S2 which I think is generally agreed to be a better all rounder as you can use it quite happily on road or track, its well screwed together and with the Toyota engine should be pretty bullet proof.
Depends what you want the car for I guess. Road use with a couple of track days each year go for the S2. Track slag go for S1
Dont know about the S2 BUT the S1 is just a grinn maker on 4 wheels…Yes it rattles, is a hard ride, has very little creature comforts, noisy…but its addictive…as the gentleman says if you want a daily driver with some softie bits its S2 BUT if you want a racer on the road is the S1
I converted from a Scooby and Just LOVE my S1 with all its faults…PS they seem to hold their value a bit better than the S2’s too
I think the simple answer is drive one. I have an S2 and drove lots of the S1’s before. There’s nothing bad you can say about either car in my opinion but there are differences.
The S1 corners like a housefly, just like the S2. They aren’t as accomplished a design as the S2, but there is something about them which is more ‘racecar’ if you know what I mean. The VHPD lump does have its limits but I’ve heard of these being tuned VERY highly indeed, but of course as soon as the SC kit for the 2 is out, who knows.
Thanks for the replys guys, pretty much as i suspected.
I do love the looks of the S1, and im sure i can cope with fewer creature comforts.
I think your right in that a test drive of the s1 is the only possible way to decide.
The car will cover around 6k a year on the road, so a fair bit of road use i guess.
The main worry in my mind is the reliability of the VHPD and as mentioned the torque, i’m running with about 380lbs of torque at the moment.
Though to be fair, driving the s2, although not blowing me away in a straight line the cornering ability more then made up for it!
One last question, I hear theres a lotus meet at the ace cafe every month, do you guys go down? Would appreciate coming to have a look at your toys and ask some more obvious questions if thats ok!
