Drive shaft oil seals

Hello All
I will be heading off down to the Le Mans Classic next week and I’ve discovered a little problem with the above.

I’ve ordered two type B oil seals that should be here for the weekend. (Fingers crossed:-)

Could anyone help as to potential pitfalls when fitting these, obviously I’m on a limited timeframe and don’t want to find on Sunday that I really could have done with this part or that.

Many thanks in advance for any help.

Stuart

Stuart - are the seals for both sides? - they are totally different sizes either side…

Remove airbox and boot aluminium engine divider - helps with access - undertray off as well

Drain the gearbox oil…

Drivehafts can be removed by just releasing the top wishbone ball joints and pulling the driveshafts out at the differential. Do not pull on the driveshaft as you risk pulling the cv joints apart - lever off from gearbox to free circlip. There should be enough space to extract splined ends from the seals.

Use a seal puller, or suitable screwdriver to remove the seals.

New seals - dry install, don’t use any seal lubricant or grease - space is a bugger - make sure they are installed all the way in and are not put in out of true and the seals are not damaged whilst installing - I cobbled together a temp ring to fit around the seal perimeter to avoid damage whilst pressing it into place.

When reinstalling driveshafts put a little gearbox fluid around the seal. Carefully put the driveshaft back in. Make sure the circlip is locked into position in the differential.

Refill with oil and take her out for a run to make sure that there are no leaks

Jobs a good un but space is a bit of a problem…

btw diff oil stocked at any Landrover dealers if you need it…

Good Luck

Bloody hell Simon - you on the wagon these days?

See ya next week, matey!

Hi Simon
Thank you very much for the info. Where else could I expect such a speedy and comprehensive response.
Will try and get this finished on Sunday - Have one of each seal so will see how I get on with the leaky one and see if I’ve still got time to complete the other.

Will you be in Portsmouth on Tueday evening or are you getting to Le Mans at a different time?
If in Portsmouth Vicky and I are looking forward to seeing you.

The same goes to Rob

Were super excited at the moment, can’t wait for the fun to begin

No probs Stuart - good luck in fitting them.

Setting off for Dover in a couple of hours - spending a fortnight touring France - aiming for Milleau viaduct Sunday

Rob - me on the wagon, saving up for petrol money tsk tsk

See you guys there - have a bon voyage

See ya next week
