I’ve had to cry off, waste the money and most importantly miss seeing a good bunch of mates. Sorry fella’s I’ve just too much on and wouldn’t be in the right frame of mind. I will be in time which is what I’m planning for.
Buddy… gutted you couldn’t make it… I guarantee you would have loved it, hope you get things sorted and can play again soon.
Was a great day… weather was as good as we could have hoped for… cold and a bit cloudy in the morning to see the eclipse but blue skies and sunshine all afternoon…
Drifting is not easy and damn frustrating! everything was done in first gear and at lowish speed… we all started off the first session really struggling to even get the back end out !
I think it’s fair to say we all improved a hell of a lot over the day, plenty of spins, plenty of frustration, plenty of laughs…
Who’d have thought you could have so much fun in an empty car park, with a 140bhp car and a few cones !!
Great day out, smiles all round, Ban Ki Moon and Pharrell have nothing on a day in a Caterham
We couldn’t have asked for any better weather in March. Weather beaten was the phrased used when I got home.
Not sure about that but certainly beaten Really surprised how stiff my hands and arms were yesterday. Didn’t realise I’d been trying so hard. Well maybe a little bit.
Congratulations to Dave who was the top Exiger on the day, and second overall. Somewhere there is some video evidence that this was far from a foregone conclusion before the final run of the day
Thanks for suggesting it Dave, I’d be up for another go. See you all at Anglesey.
Really just to echo Dave and Will’s comments about a really great day out.
The cars were set up specifically for low-speed drift; very soft on the front with low tyre pressures and the opposite on the rear. This made the handling quite odd, and to get them into lurid power slide required a particular technique. All of us learned throughout the day that speed and steering-input were two things to be minimised. Failure to observe this resulted in the car pushing-on with severe understeer, then a right old McFlurry at the helm when you tried to provoke oversteer with the throttle.
The best approach was to stay relatively slow, give the car a hint of the intended direction of travel with a bit of lock,…then give the loud-pedal a proper prod to get the rear moving. When you got it right it felt natural and really rewarding. More often than not, you found yourself with flailing around at the wheel as you overcooked it again. The most frustrating thing however was wanting to have more seat time to really dial yourself in. I would have been quite happy doing figure of eights for half an hour or more,…coulda quite happily destroyed a fresh set of rears practicing that.
The session before the final practice and assessed runs, Dave, Will and I had achieved some level of consistency,…consistently shit It was therefore with some level of trepidation that we got into the cars for the final time. There were penalties for spins, hitting cones etc and this helped to focus the mind and ultimately caused us all to slow down a bit. We all ended up putting in reasonable performances on our final runs and Dave deserved his 2nd place overall, with Will and I a couple of points adrift.
Like Will, I too ended up feeling decidedly weather-beaten by the time I got home with the typical bruised right-elbow/knee i always end up with after piloting a 7.
Thanks Dave for organising it, I would defo be up for another go or something similar.
Yeah, I was feeling pretty weather beaten too during the drive home… funny how you don’t notice it at all during the day.
Whilst I came away with a nice little cap for coming 2nd on the day, it certainly didn’t feel like I’d mastered anything at all…fortunately I managed to put a fairly decent run together for the assessed run on the course, but I’m certainly no drift god yet. Like Ben, I could have happily spent 30 mins in the car just trying to do the figure of 8’s properly !
I’d love to do it again… whether it’s the same day or something we could organise separately with a car, lots of tyres and an empty space somewhere…
I think it’s fair to say we all learnt a lot… not just applicable to Caterhams, but for car control generally…
