Donnington Friday 26th April (BookaTrack)

Things have evolved there, largely for the better it sounds.

Never done Rockingham…so could be a good idea…

It’s flat other than the banking but I love the drama of the one fast banked bend they tend to use and then diving down off it through the chicane. The in-field section is quite good too, a flowing section after the hairpin off the banking followed by a section you could scrap more in a race. The duels they do in 5th Gear give a pretty good impression.

Perhaps unsurprisingly for a circuit designs for 250mph Indy cars, it’s relatively safe. All feels quite new too, which is nice.

Ian

OK so that looks like the consensus has shifted to Rockingham and I’m happy to tick that currently unticked box!

I will plan to do a couple of Donny evenings later this year anyways from : BAT-17/5, BAT-21/6, BAT-28/6, BAT-10/7, BAT-19/7, LOT-22/7 (lots to choose from!!).

anyone up for sharing a track tutor?

guys at work already booked on rockingham day (30th) so I’m up for it

Well its pissing down today (at least in London it is) and Tuesday is currently looking dry so its feeling like we made the right choice by switching to Rockingham

And Jonny said Donny was a racecar full 'mare with with over a dozen stoppages.

It was really good to see him determined to make it a good day at Rockingham.

A step in the right direction but they still showed little respect. Shame they need to be there to fund the days for us.

Cheers, Ian

I hear what you say, it’s a challenge no doubt. There is a marked difference between a race car doing some gentle shakedown or taking sponsors for hot laps and actually doing testing for a race the next weekend. I’d suggest that race cars due to compete at that circuit the week or two before should be dissuaded from doing trackday. I very much take the point that the income the racers bring allow us amatuers to be able to trundle round.

One thing I think needs considering is timing. All racers will have a dash with GPS giving them splits, laptimes and delta’s that don’t need transponders, should any race car (ie one thats ever been through scrutineering) have to prove the GPS antenna is removed / disabled. Given that any liability insurance is made invalid by timing.

Totally agree

Just to clarify the timing situation. Timing for personal benefit is not contrary to the PLI. The issue the insurers have is “benchmarking” - so as soon as someone else other than yourself knows what laptimes you’re doing then it becomes an issue.

Agree it’s a grey area at best. I have still confiscated enough timing beacons from pit walls over the years though!

oh, so GPS laptimes up on a dash are ‘ok’ - but yes best not be concentrated on your sector delta rather than a parked elise.

sadly, it would appear that’s correct! and people wonder why we give full drivers briefings to make sure we cater for the lowest common denominator every event!
