Sad news
For those who weren’t in attendance today, tragically historic racer Christian Devereux was killed in a pre-1966 saloon car race. The official statement is here:
Terribly sad news. By all accounts it didn’t look that bad an accident. I think it was up at coppice. Thoughts and prayers to friends and family. It’s easy to forget how dangerous Motorsport stil is with all safety gizmos.
R.I.P
This is very sad news for everyone involved whether they be family, friends, officials, staff, or organisers. It’s appalling when such tragedies occur but let’s not forget that Christain died doing something he loved. We shoud all deeply regret this awful news but laud the freedom to be involved in the sport we love.
Mike, is it usual for Minis to be racing a Mustangs? Big old weight difference.
Very sad
it happened in period Ian, so i guess why not.
Really tragic news
Also lost a colleague this weekend who died with his daughter in that horrendous speedboat accident in Padstow.
Life can be cruel and too short…
As Tim says, these cars raced against each other in period. It was common for Ford Galaxie, Ford Mustang, Ford Cortina, Ford Anglia, Hillman Imp, Minis and all sorts of things to race together in period and recently the Masters Pre-'66 Touring Cars has put them out together again.
At VSCC Silverstone a fortnight ago we had a Galaxie, Mini-Jem and Aston Martin 214 sharing the podium. There is always a concern about speed differentials, open-wheeled and closed bodywork etc but classes in salon and GT racing have always produced ‘David and Goliath’ grids.
This clip is from 1967 (skip the BRM at the start if yoiu can!)
That was all over the news Ben, terribly sad on both counts.
Brings a lump to my throat…
Such tragic losses.
A very sad weekend all round
