Dodgy Pipe

Glad you got yours fixed. Just had mine done too! What sort have mileage have you done to warrant new discs? Is most of your driving track biased?Mike

Mike,Sorry, haven’t been in for a while.Mileage is just over 4k. The problem is caused by corrosive road salt, quiet (idle)period and then on track - discs overheat and become pitted. Car is back in next week for new rear discs and pads all round.Mike

Bo11ocks!Had some great drives this weekend - but just discovered that my poxy air-con pipe has broken again [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/frown.gif[/image]Car’s booked in for its 2 year service on Thursday so it’s out of warranty - but I reckon that this is so obviously a design fault that I should get it fixed for free - as it’s only lasted about 5,000 miles snce I had it done last time under warranty. What do you guys think ?Plus - if I can’t get it done gratis - anyone know how much an independant Lotus specialist would charge to fix it? I think the nearest one to me is Chris Foulds near Huddersfield.Cheers, Tim

Well the pipe is about 95 (as quoted to me by SGT recently when i sold my spare one), then it needs fitting and of course recharging, guess somewhere around 150?Best thing to do is to remove the “M” type bracket that clamps over the top of them, this will allow some movement and should relieve the stress.BTW, if an air-con system is ever “opened” the receiver/dryer should also be replaced…[This message has been edited by Phil (edited 23 March 2003).]

Cheers Phil - that was quick !95 - ouch! - it’s just a bit of pipe! plus 150 to fit and re-gas - double ouch!!.Anyone any idea who to speak to at Lotus to make my case for a free one? It’s got to be justifiable hasn’t it ?Please don’t let their name be Genghis.Cheers, Tim

TimboWhen my aircon pipe broke for the second time, my car was out of warranty. The firsr replacement had only lasted a few months (can’t rember how long exactly) but it was fixed for free by the dealer (ie Lotus) for free. That was about 12 months ago, & I’ve also fitted the Eliseparts nylatron engine mount bush, which eliminates the engine rocking movement. The bush does cause additional vibration in the cabin at startup/tickover, but that doesn’t bother me at all.Good luck [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/grin.gif[/image]

Pesky,Geary’s new bush is even better [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/grin.gif[/image]

Thanks guys - I’ll make some calls this morning (a print out of this thread may help as well).Cheers, Tim

My air-con-air pipe has broken again today!!!Infuriating.Mike

I have a spare engine mount for sale with a nylatron bush for 20 [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/wink.gif[/image]

[image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif[/image]Well - credit where it’s due - hats off to Lotus and Peter Smiths for sorting this out for me. Now got new pipes fitted foc - and Lotus have changed the spec from ally ones to hoses that look like rubber (not sure if there’s some sort of metal underneath though)Cheers, Tim

Hi All,Apparently Lotus will pay for the replacement parts but notthe labour for my broken pipe. Not a bad result I guess - it is the second time though and both times ithas happened about 1 month out of warranty - i.e. original failure at 13 months, new part fitted with 12 months guarantee and it fails again after 13 months. How do they manage to built in failure times so accurate???!!! Mike

Had this repaired yesterday.(along with a B service, braided hoses and SRF etc etc.)Apparently the ‘new’ items are more flexible. They look just as frangible as the originals to me. Time will tell.regardsMike
