I’ve got a 190 vhpd k running on just over 26,000 - is it about to blow and should I be looking at a rebuild? I like it, so wouldn’t want a honda…
My bros is on 64k and is still fine so mileage is not always indicitave of it needing a rebuild.
His doesnt even use much oil, and straight line speed is nothing to draw between either car and mine is freshly rebuilt.
Mine did 58,000 before rebuild – then I only had it done because of piston slap - it was getting mechanically noisy but wasn’t using huge quantities of oil.
Might be worth having the lifters looked at for clearances.
Feeler gauge and cam cover off job, not exactly a five minute one I’m afraid. And I’ve no idea what the actual clearances should be… DVA would be best man to speak to.
Inlet cam .008", exhaust cam .010".
I would check compressions, oil pressure and valve clearnaces, if lal these are OK then I would cross your fingers and just use the engine.
If oil consumption starts to soar or the engine gets noisy mechanically then re-check.

Using about 600ml of oil every 1000 miles or so which I have been told is well within tolerances. It also doesn’t seem any noisier since I started driving it, although I’m noticing a bit more engine noise since I had a CAT fitted to get it through the MOT, I’m assuming this is because the exhaust is a little quieter. Can anyone recommend the best place to get an honest once over - i.e if it doesn’t need doing that’s what they tell me?
sinclaire have always been very honest with me, I know a couple of times they had an option for doing the expensive repair but suggested and carried out the cheaper option, this to me inspires confidence in them.
Mine did 64000KM before a ‘light’ rebuilt: head gasket replaced, replaced these valve rubber rings (don’t know the correct name in english, in german it’s called ‘Ventilabstreifgummis’…), head cleaned and reconditioned, and the usual servicing stuff.
Result is that the engine uses only 300ml oil/1000km (was 600ml oil/100km before), and it runs smooth (as smooth as an exige runs ).
As long as the head gasket is ok, and the engine is not using excessive amounts of oil, I wouldn’t do a rebuilt. Might also depend on how you use the car (track?).
shure, you can do a rebuilt every 10000km if you can afford it
Well. Only used it on the road and doesn’t seem to be burning too much oil so may well just leave it as is. When I heard people were rebuilding engines at 19k etc thought oh f*ck mine’s about to blow!
As jke11y said, my car has now covered 67k miles without a rebuild, although the shims need adjusted it pulls very very well.
I am running it til it goes!
All confidence boosting stuff!!!
