Decibels

Anyone any idea what the noise level is inside the S1 K-series cabin (cockpit?) ?
Just read a piece about Suzi Perry going deaf due to her motorcycling adventures and I’m thinking I ought to try ear plugs, although I do have a cheap (5) bike intercom system for long journeys to allow conversation!

There’s an app for that;

Taken a while ago with a Janspeed fitted

Be careful, my db for an iphone app is about as accurate as a very inaccurate thing. Certainly way out for a noise test!

Checked mine with a calibrated noise metre at work, (construction site) and it is was + / - about 5db - fair bit but gives you an approximation.

Racing cars
Rock and Roll
Rifles

I have had a lifetime of them all …and it works!! Who?
It took me 5 days to recover from racing my new toy but its worth it .
Half past three…
'er indoors is none too pleased though :frowning:[/font]

Perhaps I should be more worried about measuring the current state of my hearing.
Here follows a couple of exchanges with Mrs Thommo, which we thought so comical we wrote them down:

Mrs Thommo:“Can I have a tissue?”
Thommo:“You’re off to Mogadishu?”

Thommo(exasperated):“You’re going to Santa’s Grotto?”
Mrs Thommo: " No, I’m going home to eat risotto"

New toy?
Have I missed something?

Thommo,

From myrule of thumb training in constuction if you hav to raise your voice to be heard when stood 6ft from someone, it is around 85Db & until recently this was the threshold for offering hearing protection. 85Db is now the level at which protection is mandatory to be worn. As you know conversation is near hopeless at 80mph+ in the S1, so you are well above any hearing protection threshold.

That said, it also depends on the duration of the exposure. As the exige is a toy used only for a couple of hours a week it shouldn’t really be an issue, so long as you don’t get excessive exposure to noise at work etc. Since my late teens I have worked in sometimes very noisy environments (construction + loud clubs/bars, 30 years of gigs + S1 elise & Exige ownership  My ears do ring constantly, but only a little & noticable in a very quiet room so not really an issue.

I did get an infection recently which caused alot more ringing in both ears & the Mrs was not best pleased with me always having to ask her to repeat herself.

My ‘problem’ has since turned back to normal but is was enough of a warning to buy some protection. I bought some Alpine Misic safe Pro earplugs (amazon) & they are really very good & comfortable & great for gigs. Cost is around 20 but better than going deaf

The other alternative is an S2 S with standard exhaust. As quiet as a church mouse at 80mph :sunglasses:

Many thanks for that well considered reply.
Ear plugs, I might buy.
But not a S2 S with standard exhaust.

I have a ringing in my ears. I put it down to hearing the V16 BRM live on a couple of occasions when it was demonstrated at Oulton many years ago. So the damage was probably already done before I got the Exige.

I think more than 30 mins in an S1 is my personnal cut-off point for wearing ear plugs. If only I followed my own advice more frequently I’d be better off.

There’s a thread over on Seloc about this and I tend to agree with the posters who say that after long journeys they get out feeling less tired after wearing plugs.
