cv or wheel bearing

have had a loud noise from rear of car for a while kind of droning noise that gets worse on left handers
i have checked the wheel bearing boths sides no movement at all ,so assumed must be box so i bought a box of sean of here and fitted yesterday with a new clutch (release bearing was shot and plate nearly totaly worn out)
all went back together ok but on driving it noise is still there
any ideas???
least it wasnt a wasted excersise as the clutch was on its last leg
do cv fail ,dont swivel ala front wheel drive so less chance i assume
any help gratefully excepted

It certainly sounds like it could be the wheel bearing - mine sounded as you describe. Not too expensive a fix.

Sounds like a wheel bearing, easiest way to fix it is to take off the upright and take it to your local garage to press out the bearing and press a new one in, shouldn’t cost you more than a tenner plus the cost of the bearing

cheers for replys did test bearing and had no play
have a 200 ton press so can do myself may just do all 4
not likely to be cv then

Around 30 for a wheel bearing. Much cheaper than a CV joint. Mine didn’t have any play in it - it just made a horrid noise. Actually the same sort of noise my alternator bearing is making.

recently i’ve had similar dilema. Couldn’t identify what bearing(s) were noisy… no play at all and jacking the car up, pushing, pulling rotating etc etc didn’t reveal anything. However, when I replaced my brake discs last week I discovered that when you remove wheel, brake pads and take the disc off, this lets you rotate the hub on its own and makes it ver easy to feel the ‘gritty’ bearing. The rears are a wee bit more difficult because of the drive shafts being connected but I could still tell good from bad… means I need front and rear drivers side replacing. bah !!

cheers for replys have ordered a couple of bearings

got my ass in gear yesterday and got i changed of the offside rear wheel bearing nice simple job which make a change for me , now car a quite as a mouse
cheers for all the advise guy top site
still amazed at the fact there was no play get when i had hub of the bearing was fecked
cheers again

I had a similar problem, the wheel bear seemed ok, but it had worn enough to allow the tyres to start rubbing, which gave enough vibration to hide the real cause and any other possibility.

Further checks identified 2 failed bearings, so I had all 4 changed just in case.
