After several years of trackdays my crash helmet has developed a certain “aroma” . Any suggestions as to how to get rid of it?
You say you’ve had it for several years. Crash helmets don’t last for ever, even if thay haven’t already saved your life. In competition the MSA changes the standards occasionally to ensure that they get replaced. If it smells it is probably time to replace yours.
The date of manufacture marked on the helmet is 2002. I bought it mid 2003 and I guess it’s done about 30 or so trackdays. I’ve always treated it with the utmost care, it’s always been either bagged or boxed when not in use and well aired before putting it away.
The smell’s not bad, in fact I can’t smell it at all but my sense of smell’s very poor anyway. It was something my gf mentioned when I asked her after the last trackday. I just wondered if there was something I could use to freshen it up a bit.
I’m still using the same helmet I used to use in karting when I was 14 It’s not seen too much action though because Since I stopped karting it sat on a shelf until I got the Elise back in '05. It’s overdue for replacement though and a new Arai is already on the wishlist… unfortunately purchase of new car has stalled progress on the helmet front.
Get yourself down to a motorcycle shop - they sell helmet deodorants…according to RussT anyway
Demon Tweeks sell it too: http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/products/ProductDetail.asp?cls=MCYCLE&pcode=WUR89301434
PS Just PMSL at “People also bought this product”

Friend of mine just taught herself to airbrush and just did her own helmet, she’s an Esprit Jockey (… the Lotus Esprit, not forum user Esprit thankyou very much!) She incorporated an Exige roof vent into her design…
You’ll see she’s got her brain hardwired to the Lotus matrix

Going to get her to paint mine when I get one
I always wear a balaclava under my helmet (sparco +/- 15) After every outing it gets bunged in the wash and smells of Roses ready for my next time.
My helmet always smell like new even after some 24 Hour races I’ve done !

Me too
I’ve still to try my new “Pesky” blue open faced helmet in anger !
I must admit I have tried it on in front of the bathroom mirror and tried to imagine what it would be like to really be “Pesky”
