crankcase vacuum

As per title …
A vw petrol engine has negative crankcase pressure …
I’ve never come across this before in 30 years of tinkering…
Any ideas ?

Who told you that?

One of the advantages of dry sumped engines is that they run a small vacuum in the crank case as it gives extra bhp. Oil seals are the big issue though as they are designed to stop oil getting out rather than air getting in.

erm not sure on that, they suffer blowby like any other engine surely, and all the VW engines I’ve seen have fairly normal breathers.

It’s my Dads car …
It’s thrown a mil light with code p0118 " engine coolant temperature circuit high input"
I had a quick look late last night and its running on 2/3 cylinders .
When I take off the oil filler cap to check for heavy breathing there is a healthy vacuum sucking the cap back on its seat along with a quite audible hiss …
As I say ,most unusual …
