Just looking at the Paul Matty Exige, suits me all bar the colour, not to offend anyone just personally not keen on Laser blue, anyone know the cost of a proper panel off respray?
As keep discussing in other threads to few cars about to wait for the ideal one in every aspect…
thanks for feedback - more than I expected being honest.
Ref price I think for a late car with harnesses and belts which are pretty desirable, being an 01 car it’ll likely be a 190 and for what its worth air con (I think I m right the last cars basically had all the options to help them sell). I think it’ll go easily, miles are low as well. I imagine Paul has a bit of haggle in that price. 22-22.5k looks pretty norm for a dealer price to me.
The of vast majority of S1 Exiges were made in a production run during September/October/November 2000, & most were then stockpiled at the factory. This was at the time of the introduction of the S2 Elise, & the tooling up to produce the VX220, hence they were built in a production run, rather than to order. Accordingly, a late 2001 registration does not necessarily mean a 2001 manufacture. Chassis number will determine date made eg mine is 409, was in stock at the factory in November 2000, & I took delivery on 3rd January 2001. Initial sales were very slow (due to price compared to the Elise), & in fact the factory dropped the price by three grand in December 2000 to help sales. Registrations picked up during 2001, & an odd few more were made to order, with all UK registrations having to be completed by 31st December 2001 to meet emissions regulations.
You may be lucky & find Mr Matty in a good mood & get a few quid off, but don’t expect much - especially if you get a (3 month?) warranty
There is one hell of a lot of work to properly strip down clams/doors for a complete colour change. Obviously, if you do the clam/door/roof/engine cover removal & re-fitting yourself, there are substantial cost savings
Thanks Pesky - I ve often noticed that 01 reg cars often have a high spec (MS seats, harnesses and 192bhp) so assumed it was a sales thing…appreciate the insight.
I was in mattys a week or so a go looking at an lan he had.
We got on to the subject of S1 exiges and the problems of sourcing nice clean examples. At that time he didn’t have any in stock and asked me if I was selling (errrr NO) but by the way he was talking I got the impression that if he got a good one he wouldn’t be into discounting to get a quick sale.
Did think his cars were priced at the top end of the Market but that said they did look well prepared.
Mr Matty has never been a “discounter”, but he knows his stuff, & a dealer I would trust - he’s been around a long time, & his premises are always worth a visit to have a look at his stock.
As Pesky said there is a hell of a lot of work involved to properly prep an exige for respray. I took mine from laser blue to Kawasaki green and it’s taken months doing it myself. For example each door takes about 3 hrs to strip and the same to rebuild if doing a proper job. If your paying for it to be stripped and preped then it significantly adds to the bill. 1500 - 2500 is probably about right for a decent sprayer to do the panels. Any of the lotus bling colours adds a lot to the bill, I think about 100 per litre plus double the work spraying vs 20 per litre for a solid colour.
I would put money on it having had paint. The front clam drivers side to drivers door is shaded, the front corner drivers side looks too “metallic” and its missing the light covers. At money that strong I wouldnt expect stuff like that to be obvious from photos.
I agree it may well have had a front end (or more) re-spray - I find it surprising how many folks think a few stonechips are a “big deal” in the overall scheme of things…
Yeah I doubt there is Mk1 Exige or elise on the planet that hasn’t had the front end painted. Basically if it isn’t stone chipped to buggary, then it has been painted!
I also don’t see a problem with this. You need to check every car you look at for signs of accident damage, but a repainted front end on an Exige is more often than not down to a geeky owner that wants to keep his car looking nice rather than it having a one to one with the back end of a cement truck at 120mph.
