Coolant Level Rising?

Since I’ve had the Exige, coolant and oil levels have been rock solid. I’m obviously not driving hard enough.

Had a good Sunday afternoon (and evening!) blast last Sunday, all was well.

Gone to take it out today, oil level still good - but Coolant level is a good inch higher? Previously its always been solid on the max line…and while I’ve seen colant loss, never seen it gain!

Any suggestions? Reluctant to use it until I know what I’m dealing with. Don’t want to take any out either as it was on the right level before…

Ta!

Matt give us a shout if you need it taking anywhere, we can stick it on my trailer.

Could be just expansion due to warmer temperature .
Hopefully is just that . The only other thing it could be is air somewhere in the system …and that usually means one thing , HGF .

Cheers Harvey, appriciate the offer

jfk, that what worries me  No signs of mayo anywhere, and temps are as solid as they’ve always been. The warranty with Paul Matty’s runs out next week…

Took the “excess” fluid out, took it gently around the block just to get it up to temp - all seems ok. Will have another look later.

As an aside, as I’ve never really paid much attention to coolant levels on any any car unless I’m doing my weekly checks…but when the car is running (and up to temp), shouldn’t the coolant level be quite low in the expansion tank?? I looked at mine after the run, and it was quite full, tank looked about 80% capacity?

Hi Matt
When the engine is up to temp the level should be higher - when you heat water it expands, hence the name expansion tank.

Alex

But 80% full sounds quite high - I’d get it checked out before your warranty expires!

Get a check to see if there is combustion gases in the water, if there is headgasket has sadly failed and at least you caught it early

^^^ good advice Ade

As an aside, if it is as expected, is it worth fitting a PRT at the same time as its being fixed? I’ve yet to see any real evidence that they actually help, other than “theories”…?

Had this myself in past and it was just a quirk - worrying at time tho’.

If combustion gases are getting into coolant when engine switched off as pressure differential reversed so coolant can get into cylinders - so imho it doesn’t register as possible hgf.

Try a new header tank cap.

Spoke to Paul Matty’s today, he says that he’s doubtful of it being HGF, more likely a faulty cap as you say Simon.

Is being looked at next week anyway, just to play it safe. Need it back for my Carlimits day in March!

Likely just a faulty cap or being warmer. If it’s gas in the coolant, typically this will airlock and cause erratic temps, and over time it’ll settle back down as the gas bubbles are burped out.

If it’s oil getting into the coolant you’ll get mayo. Seems you’ve got neither of these.

Likely to have just gotten warmer so the tank is sitting a little higher

These caps do fail from time to time. I had to replace mine a couple of years back as it was blowing out a tiny bit of coolant on each trip and left a dribbly stain (easy on the smut fellas) on the outside of the expension tank.

I’m not getting an dribbles (!) but is there a way to test the cap at all?

I’m not ruling it out, but this amount of fluid gain seems high for a temp change. We’ve had some temp fluctuations recently and its never moved.

Hi Matt,

The best way to test it is to buy another one and see if it works. I believe they are around the 5 mark (unless they have gone up a lot recently) - might be more if you get stung for postage

Cheers,

Clive.

Matt,

I’d get it to Paul Matty, they are are good dealer and then, if it goes pop in a few weeks you have a better chance they will sort it.

I fail to understand how a faulty filler cap would fill the header tank. Gas trapped in the system pushing up the fluid (which also seams unlikely) has to be pressurised and there is only one place it can come from…I think…and that’s the HG.

I’ll send you a copy of Haynes ‘how an internal combustion engine works’

Do you worry at night?

Look on the positive side Simon…

… another VHPD will soon be on it’s way to you!

I can’t really see why a leaking filler cap can make the coolant level go up unless the system has an airlock which expands (when the engine gets hot) and pushes the level up - which would happen with or without a faulty filler cap. The level will go back down when the engine cools.
