Comparative lap times: s1 vs s2?

it would have been interesting to see what times he would acheived in an S1.

Why? It would be a different car at a different time under different conditions. Only racing shows the true comparison between cars but even then there is the driver difference to take into account. Even then team mates in the same shared car get different times on the same day. It’s all so pointless - it’s an unanswerable question. One thing is clear - the factory DO claim that the test drivers were able to get round Hethel quicker in an S2 they they did in an S1 - but they might have been lying in order to sell some cars…

Clearly the original questionner wanted to know which was faster a S1 or a S2. Answer - test drive them and then decide yourself.

S1 on 39s & S2 on 48s! As you say Mike, it’s a pointless (although understandable to be asked) question - hence the rather brief response in my first post

Ding!

A 190 S1 with 48’s has got to be quicker than an S2 on 48’s due to the power to weight ratio - same driver, natch.

An n/a Honda’d S1 is quicker than an S2, as I found out when Pesky kicked my butt up and down Anglesey last year. Mind you, I was driving one handed, with a twenty stone passenger, crap tyres, buggered brakes, with a slight headache and completing The Times crossword with my left hand.

And you’d taken the roof off

You forgot to mention Dave Minter in the ExigeS, who kept holding me up too

Dont listen to Pesky he talks a load of bolloxs, my driving is average at best…(goes to wash target off back )

I would agree with that comment. From what I have experienced the 190 s1 is a far more cabable car on track straight out the box than the s2 is. Although to be fair, I think both cars had a different target audience over the 5 yrs from when each were introduced. In my opinion the standard s1 was a track car that could be driven on the road, where as the s2 is more a road car that can be driven on a track…As much as I hate to say it, the s2 as it leaves the factory has been diluted somewhat from the original s1…

Now who’s talking bollox?

PS Have you finally ditched yer roof now?

At Plans Motorsport, where we have a test track and lots of Lotuses, we have found that the single biggest variable bar none is the driver.

Have a look at the Pistonheads Challenge:

and the discussion forum here:

The only real comparative test would be if we could find (as a minimum) one S1 owner and one S2 owner. If they are happy to drive their own car and then each other’s cars, we could do a comparative test here at Plans on the Top Gear circuit. We could use videa and data logging to make the test irrefutable.

Anyone up for it?

As a Plans freebie - in the interest of Exige owners everywhere?

No, I didn’t so…

Yeah ill do it, just need someone with an s1 now.

S1 drivers will not turn up

Think it would make more sense if the S2 was standard eh Gav

What some people have forgotten is that the S1 Exige never made the reported bhp figures straight out the box, where as all the S2 Exiges seem to get the 189bhp.

I would think that they’re so close as to make no odds. Choose on other criteria rather than on supposed lap times.

Steve,

It’s the TG track.

Thing is though it’s impossible to compare properly as a S1 driver is used to a S1 and a S2 driver to a S2 so will never get the best out of the other car, plus who would actually drive someone elses car at 100% with the risk of damaging it.

Unless you could find someone with a bog standard S1 and S2 and had thrashed them both on track?

Sounds like an Exiges day out

Sorry its gone now but I posted a aerial photo of the site and just wanted to know where the actual circuit was as it looked quite boring with long straights and only a couple of corners.

Hey unc thats cooooool man.
Glad you’r back with us…we all missed your pithy comments
I might even do an oop North track day to catch up with you to add to my circuit collection.
Interesting to hear that an early Honda convert has bought himself a Type K and likes it…Originality will out
