Probably for the same reason why there is so much snow in the Sahara desert.

Cool photo, where did it come from? it looks slightly un-real…the penumbra is very narrow, and I thought the penumbra would be wider in the north, than in the south?And check out the oil refineries in nigeria. they are burning the midnight oil!-Gman
