Clutch Problem

Pulled the car out of the garage and noticed that the clutch biting point was very low but it went into gear OK. Parked it on the drive and switched off, when I went back to it, it would not go in gear at all. The clutch pedal felt like it had no resistance. No difference in noise with engine running and clutch pedal in/out.

On looking back, I think on the previous drive the pedal travel had not felt smooth but rather had a couple of points in its travel that felt a little stiff.

My list of things to check in order is:

  1. Clutch slave cylinder bracket
  2. Clutch slave cylinder leaking
  3. Clutch release arm moving freely (disconnect clutch slave cylinder arm to check)
  4. Master cylinder leaking

Anything I’ve missed or should be doing differently?

Happened to me at Oulton 4 yrs ago.Clutch pipe had fractured where it bolted to slave cylinder.Fitted a new braided pipe-no more problems. That is possibly the problem.

Yeah what is the fluid reser like?

Ducatiman - thanks checked that also and is appears to be dry. Although it is tucked well away under a rat’s nest of cables so hard to see clearly.

Sean - fluid was changed less than a hundred miles ago, and it’s only really been out on the one all-day run since. Fluid looks to be well up in the reservoir.

I have now checked that the slave cylinder is dry and appears to be pushing the rod a decent distance. The master cylinder also appears to be dry.

I started her up and tried to move her a short distance and she moved both forwards and backwards. The only issue appears to be a creaking noise when depressing the pedal and the fact that the pedal does not appear to return fully back up again but stops about 1cm short.

I have a concern over the flexible tube that connects the reservoir to the master cylinder, not sure if it’s visible in this photo but it appears to have partially collapsed on the tight radius.

If its not a simple “needs bleeding” issue, my bet would be on the master cylinder being worn, second guess would be slave cylinder.

Thanks for the response.

Would it be normal to clamp the flexible hose to the clutch when changing the brake fluid?

no, just keep the reser filled. Plus when you are bleeding the brakes, the fluid isn’t going to empty on its way to the clutch master

Makes sense, thanks.
