Clio 172 Cup thread

Some people just aren’t true Renault enthusiasts

This is a terrible answer but I have some AKG headphones that are like Trigger’s Broom - I keep adding replacement foam and they keep performing. But the outer is just the same. Eventually got fed up and tried allsorts, convinced that the old school Tar & Adhesive Remover I had in the garage would destroy it because it comes from an era where your health mattered less than the cleanliness of your car.

Nope. Fail.

As a last resort and ready for binning them I got a plastic scraper (guitar pick, strong, sharp and not too bendy) and took the thick off. Then I used the glue remover above and that was still a chore, certainly doesn’t walk off but it worked.

Btw, worst thing I removed last year was resin from the hedge clippers. Scrubbed and scrubbed with petrol and a very stiff parts cleaner brush, you know the type. No way was that coming off. Then I decided I’d play the ‘no way’ card and used an old electric toothbrush frequently dipped in petrol. Well hello there. OK, it didn’t walk off and took me an hour but it was crazy how good it worked. Feel free to ignore this method for the interior of your motor vehicle.

I could buy a whole new Renault for that kind of cash!

Not sure if serious?

K550? They look a bit deeper than mine, have you got a very small head?

Indeed they are a k550.

Not quite sure how to answer if I have a small head or not.

Wait…'snot you…'sme…I’ve got a very big head…I found this out when I did the odd karting session when they would pretty much end up giving me the equivalent of the fire bucket. As you were.

Today I went to see the Renault Oracle that is Paul from https://diamond-performance.co.uk/ to do a driveshaft swap and a gearbox fluid change

First job was to drain the gearbox fluid. It did contain some sparkly treasure but as it settle to the bottom it doesnt exist. It also looks a bit weird.

Paul did some magic with this

to make a knackered one of these come out

All of this was done on one of these.

I so desperately need one of these ( lift , not cup. I have a cup already ! )

I dont have any reassembly pictures but I can say that the driveshaft is now click free.

However with the cup that keeps on giving I have discovered a knackered rear exhaust mount. Ill get one ordered!

Huge thanks to Paul @ Diamond Performance.

Something isn’t right here. I think it’s the parrot getting in the way.

Known good Clio 172 54 plate cd / radio.

Can hear static. Beeps.

Nothing on the clock / temp though. Audio works via Bluetooth ( parrot )

I suspect the loom adapter has broken this part. The stalks appear to work.

In todays episode of I did a thing ; The rear exhaust mount was changed over

I have been suffering with milky wheel syndrome for a few weeks.

Cue a tip to get the heat gun out and see if I can get the moisture out.

Ha! Good point!

Today I decided to swap out the checkstrap on the drivers side door.

Nothing went to plan.

  1. The checkstrap didnt fit
  2. I broke the plastic part that helps align the doorcard to the top of the door. Its superglued for the short term

However, I did have a supervisor.

Door card off

Back on - can just about make out the damage

Supervisor not impressed

I have two new check straps to fit and a replacement piece for the top of the door card that I cracked .

I am on the lookout for a new bonnet as my is rough. The car isn’t perfect, but this lets it down.

The 172cup is now my daily workhorse.

One wheel off for straightening and some paint. Lost a little chunk at Anglesey!

Todays weather has been sunny.

I have a replacement weather strip

I have two check straps.

The replacement one looked too long, but looks can be deceptive. It fitted well and I didnt have a wrestle with the doorcar putting it back together. The door is now proper stiff to open and close in a good way. Am I supposed to apply grease anywhere?

I had noted the dash binnacle was rattling at any speed so whipped off the steering column surround and nipped that up.

I neshed the other side as I wanted to quit while winning. One for another day.

This car is the gift that keeps giving.

Yesterday I fixed the drivers side check strap and a few rattles.

For my service to the restoration of the car the boot lock is now clicking and won’t open.

Investigation required I think!

in an act of the car wont defeat me I decided today was the time to change the center exhaust hanger.

I appreciate it’s likely to fail again , but for now it will do.

Oh, and now the lock has completely packed in on the boot
