Cheap satnav with European maps

Anyone got a recommendation for the above?
Got an old TomTom but it’s been suggested to me that buying new would not be much dearer than upgrading maps.

Google Maps is by far the best Sat Nav around now I reckon. Depending on what your mobile contract is like. I use Vodafone and there European costs for data are virtually nothing. You just pay £2 a day and you are then on your UK plan.

One MAJOR flaw with using your mobile as a satnav is that when your phone loses signal ,so does your satnav !!
About as useful as a chocolate fire guard imho …
sorry Sean can’t agree with you on this one

No, I find Google maps frustrating in all it’s forms, PC, iPad, iPhone etc. but thanks, Sean for your input,
output and throughput!

Whatever you do stick with Tom Tom…
I have just had a new radio thingy fitted to the van which uses Garmin for the navigation, Its the most stupid, slow, irritating unintelligent pile of shit I have ever used

http://www.saverstore.com/product/20345159/TOMTOM-GO-BUSINESS-LIVE ? might do the job.

If your Tom-Tom has a memory card slot, you can probably download the relevant maps off their website onto a memory card and pop it in. Cost £20 to do this for a trip to the US last year!

My TomTom must be 6 years old.
The roads that are any good don’t change
Full itinerary planning is the best feature on TomTom (not the ones with just 4 or 5 waypoints)

Navigon app by Garmin on my phone has been fantastic driving to Italy , much better than a tom tom .

Many thanks for your views, chaps. Looking at is TomTom Start 25 M Eu £119.99 @ Currys

No memory card slot.

Sorry, don’t understand that if phone signal is lost as often happens whilst driving in the remoter regions in UK & Europe. Never had a problem with a GPS signal to SatNav in the areas I’ve been, but can’t say the same with the phone.

Also, being an old it I find it easier to look at/follow info on a screen which is somewhat larger than that on my phone

I have had the navigon app for years now and never had a problem with it loosing gps , I have driven to the south of France & Italy a few times since and it worked perfectly , it also out performed my friends tom tom and the range rover built in sat nav that tried taking us down some bonkers roads , it’s also live with traffic reports , with the iPhone 5s it’s plenty big enough display for me and the Bluetooth voice commands that turn down your radio automatically is great . I can also update it without pluging into a PC , just direct to the phone , think the app was about £80

haha. Good satnav banter. I have had signal issues using google maps, but not enough to make me give up on it. Plus the traffic and re-routing is better than any garminge or tom tom tom I have ever used.

Could always use a map !!

I am such an arse. Plugged TomTom into the computer today and discovered I have full maps of Western Europe which I now vaguely remember purchasing a couple of years ago before a trip to France. Now updated as of this am.
Glad to have sparked such an interesting debate!
Thanks, chaps.

Never had an issue with Tom tom, it has sent me on a few magical mystery tours over the years, but so has the built in one in my A3 and google maps on the iPhone, all have there faults

Agreed , they all have there faults , some are shocking though .

Am I on my own still using an atlas ??

I love having a big paper map.

I find its much better for persective.

However the 29GBP i paid for the CO PILOT sat nav on the iphone last year w full European maps has been fantastically usefull. Really worth every cent and tbe maps are permanently on the phone so no data use.

No, you’re not. No wonder these people get lost… :astonished:
