Chargecooler pump

The last 2 weeks my car has started to make a whirring noise that comes and goes whilst sat in traffic that never used to be there before. Ive just been out in the car this lunch time and realised its the chargecooler (Proalloy) making the noise. Not had chance to inspect properly, but is there a quick way to check the pump is fully working how it should?

Take of the cap on the header tank and you can see the water running in, you might need a mirror

Does the water flow through the very top pipe in the header tank?

that is what mine does it squirts into the header tank.

Then it not working! took the cap off at lunch and stuck my finger over the pipe and nothing was running through. You can normally here the water too! Either there is not enough water in it, or the pumps had its day.

…hopefully it might explain why the car wasn’t really pulling away from a 250bhp SC vx220 at the weekend.

What pump do you have on yours? The bosch one?

Possibly sorted.

I used a mirror to look into the header tank, and there was no water in there! I’ve added 1.5 litres of water and it all seems to be back to normal now and the water is following fine. 1.5 litres isn’t that much compared to how much the system takes, so I’m hoping there isn’t a leak anywhere.

It may have simply been a bleed issue.

I have a bleed tube coming from my charge cooler rad in the front of the car, one in the charge cooler itself and one in my reserviour. (My reser is very big and burried at the front in my car.)

I have found a possible cheap source of the Bosch Pad 12v pumps, I might well buy a few for some stock, going to get one to see if it is correct.

Adrian, please keep us updated with the bosch pump, I’m interested.
The same as included in the Pro-alloy kit?

Is there a history of these pumps failing?

None yet, but as I might have found them cheap I might get a few as I’m going to add another one on my car anyway, then get some spares.

My tubing from the header tank to the chargecooler is clear so shows the water flowing through. It’s quite handy as I can even see it through the back window whilst driving if ever I need reasurrance that the things working. i even thought of adding some orange food colouring altho not sure if it would upset the pump (!)

You could always change yours to clear…or for the extra 2 secs just make a note to check the water levels in your tank at the same time you check your oil, etc.

Does your not have anti freeze in it then? Get some in before the winter if not…
