Caterhams

Bit off topic I realise, but does anybody know the basic spec. of the Superlight R, specifcally power and weight?

Thanks, Mark

My mates R300 was 520kg and 156bhp out the factory, following a bit of tinkering by DVA and throwing a lot of cash at carbon goodies etc its now about 475kg and 217bhp.

The superlight R went through a few variations. The earliest ones had some funny throttle bodies of a KV6 mounted on a manifold and they made ~ 187BHP. Later ones from ~2000 had an integrated throttle/manifold assy which gave a little more power (~ 193BHP) and then they changed into the R400 which had rollerbarrel throttles and gave a quoted 200BHP. They weight about 530kg with the screen on and all fuelled up.

My old one is for sale at Caterham…

(the previous owner sold it to Caterham for about 15.5K! That was bargain)

So, basically, a late SL R is pretty much the same as an R400?

What year did they change?

Mark

Not 100% sure but I thought the early Super Light R’s (prior to the launch of the R300, 400,500) were a case of customer chooses engine spec. I think they ranged from 135 HP up to around 20OHP and if you look at the classifieds there are loads of different spec’s.
In fact those Bookatrack caterhams are quoted at 135 HP and I’m pretty sure they are badged ‘Superlight R’

Get an R400 and let me have a go!

You know you more than welcome Steve

I’m definetely getting an R400 or something with similar power, but the specs of the pre ‘R’ series cars is mind boggling.

I’ve stopped looking at 2-11’s and X-Bows in favour of cash in the bank.

The Std superlight comes with a 135BHP 1.6 engine. The R spec engine was an upgrade from the standard spec. I cant remember when they changed to R400 though.

That was a strange one.
Guy local to me In Aberdeen owned it fo a few months but bought a new Elise as replacement. A guy came up from London, bought it, drove it home and within 48hrs it was back on pistonheads. Apparently, didn’t know what he was buying and it was too fast and too small for his frame.

Having sold my Exige to buy the below SLR I can highly recommend it. The SLR is very fast with fantastic handling. Ran the same pace recently as a newish R400 and a Elise Supercharged Honda. In saying all that, I’m contemplating selling…but then that’s nothing new with me

The standard Superlight had the 135bhp on a 1.6lt k

The Superlight R was a 1.8lt with 190bhp on TB’s then 200bhp on roller barrells. which then became the R400

My kids want me to buy it back… I cant deny part of me wants to bring it home too
