Cars with history

Not so long ago the black Exige, AU04EFN, that Clarkson used against the AH64 Apache went up for sale.
Now on Pistonheads there is the white Exige S that he and the Stig thrashed round the track.
This car, AU55JEO, was also used as a demo car for Lotus so all the motoring press have had their turn in attempting to thrash the car.

My question is this,
Does anyone have an opinion on whether the cars with this type of history are worth purchasing or avoiding?

At least you know the history of the car, you buy most 2nd cars blind of the history.

An upside is that it will have been checked over by lotus everytime it was thrashed, last thing they want is for it to break down when the press are using it.

That’s what I was thinking.
This particular car was re-sprayed about a year ago so stone chips should be a minimum too.

I looked at buying an ex Lotus car last year (a white one down in the SW) but was warned (in a friendly way) that the car would not be coming with ANY warranty, it was a 55 Plate N/A PP.

Check the warranty first.

was the the one the lotus-centre was selling? I backed out of that too, it had T/C iirc

Yup, that was the one - also had wall to wall Gumball stickers all over it.

Personally, I wouldn’t touch one, unless they’re discounted by at least 3K.

There are so many about you can afford to be choosey, personally I would not take one even with 3k off AND warranty.

my mate nearly bought the s2 n/a chrome orange one a while back. Looked ok, but engine numbers didn’t match the V5 which I must admit if you were lotus you would have changed.

he was put off with that and walked away.

It all depends what kind of ex lotus car you buy, the track and demo cars I would not touch but I am now on my second ex management car, my S2 111s was a fantastic car and so is my new exige, both have been much better than the exige I bought brand new thats for sure.

cheers

p.s. ex management cars get a full warranty etc
