Copied from SELOC:
For manual tensioner:
Rover pt no. LHN100390
Gates pt no. 5416XS
Piper pt no. TBP17 wide
(I’m told all VHPDs are manual tensioner?)
They’re standard Rover parts anyway, fairly easy to find. I got my last one from GSF and it was a Gates kit.
Belt and tensioner: https://www.gsfcarparts.com/129ro0070
Water pump if you want that too: https://www.gsfcarparts.com/170lr0024
(use code CLUBGSF for 40% off their inflated list prices)
As above, all VHPD’s are manual tensioners. Apparently, the Piper belts may not have the correct tooth profile last thing I heard. Either Gates from ECP or RImmer brothers would be my first choice.
Thanks guys, that’s interesting. So if piper vernier pullies are fitted will the tooth profile then be different to the crank pullies?
Was advised not to run piper belt, with standard crank pulley/piper cam pulleys when building an engine for ET by the guy that did the head. Used standard belt instead on his recommendation. I think the record over rev on the down change was over 9k without issues. Did lots of race miles and was the last thing I needed to worry about! The scenery/other cars tended to be a bigger challenge.
I’ll go with the gates then, I have the tool to lock the cams but is there a tool to lock the crank?
Yes and no. There is an official tool, but never got it to work with the engine in and gearbox fitted. Have always managed to lock the crank in place using a large screwdriver in the flywheel in the gap by the OS driveshaft. Don’t have the cam locking tool in place while you do this though! The bigger challenge is finding/making a short enough socket for the crank pulley bolt. In the end I got someone to machine down a socket to suit, recall its half the depth it started. Meant I could fit a 1/2 breaker bar and torque wrench between the engine and chassis with the mount still in place.
I’ve found a Laser 4410 Tool online. I may see if I can get it to work.
I used the locking tool from Elise parts and hacksawed a socket down for the crank pulley. I have used it several times with no problems.
For the cam belt I use the vvc Gates kit Ko15416xs.
