Buying a S1 Exige

Right then, I am going to look at a Series one car on Friday, and I need to know what to look for. I have had a series 1 Elise, so I know roughly what to look for there, but the Exige is fairly new to me. Any suggestions? I have provisionally bought this car, don’t know what the colour is yet! Seemed like a fantastic idea at the time!

Ed

LOL! Well it’s not to different from the Elise AFAIK.

All the usual stuff really, if the engine is clean, bodywork is OK etc… If it’s got the Lotus ECU then it runs like a bag of nails under 2.5 / 3k rpm but should rev freely up to 7800 at least…

Not a lot else I can think of to be honest, I’m sure some of the others will have better suggestions.

You pays your money and takes your choice. All depends what you want - track day - every day or combined. If the one you look at is not for you, I’m considering selling mine - drop me an email and I’ll give you all the details. Miles

Tyres! 600+ a set, so make sure there’s some tread left (they only start with 5mm). They only last about 5000 miles BTW. I am taking about proper Yoko rubber here, make sure they’re A039s or A048s. You’ll have to get a set if they’re something else, just to learn about the full magic of the car! It’s just not the same without them.

Stone chipping is very normal at the front and at the bottom of where the front and rear clam overlap.

A delaminating rear (smoked) hatch, you will either have to live with or spend A LOT to have it replaced.

Just buy it, ( subject to quality ) you know its the right thing to do .

Apart from that , it would be nice to see another Exige flying about East Yorkshire .

Ducatiman and myself could do with another Exige to look at.

As far as I know there are only 3 Exiges in East Yorkshire, one red ,blue and one in black ?

Am going to look at it tomorrow. I have bought it subject to viewing. I believe it to be Silver. Looking forward to driving her, and I will post pictures on my website tomorrow. I will post the link when I have built it! Where abouts in East Yorks are you based? I have only seen the odd Elise about. There was a Black Exige until someone took a side out of it.

Cheers

Ed

no no not the silver one, anything but a silver one, it’s possibly the worst colour ever. Oh hang on mines silver, good luck hope it’s in good nick, plus the colours the dogs danglies, better than yellow

Was it written off by the Insurance Co, & originally supplied by F1 in Newcastle? If it was, it’s probably alive & kicking again, & living in …

Not sure if it was actuallt written off. It was in the workshop for 4 months while they tried to put the side in it. Previous owner was a Mr Read or a construction company…I think they wanted around 16,000 after the re-build…

Which if I recall correctly is not something Lotus have ever provided a santioned method for? Not to say that it’s not possible of course.

Sounds like the black motorsport version I was on about, the owner is based in Hornsea { east Yorks } and crashed it into a tree stump.

Unsure if he has sold it yet ?it was a W reg car .

That was the puppy! I am based near Hornsea too, so not a million miles away! Am waiting to hear from Lotus regarding a quick service and check over of the Exige, then I will be bringing it back up here… I used to have a Ruby Red Elise a while back. My brother has it now and is based in Skirlaugh.

With you living near Hornsea ,you will be able to give the Exige a quick road test on your local country roads.

Ideal for the Exige.

Think I remember seeing a S2 ruby red Elise ? in the days I had a black S2 .

There is a Ruby Red series 2 based this way still. Parked at a factory in Brandesburton during the day. Mine was a series 1! Am shipping the Exige to Joe Macari in London for a service and tune up. Hell it needs it! Will be interesting to see how a Ferrari dealer gets on with the Lotus!

Will let you know when it gets up here!

Ed

Good luck with your service , tune up etc .

From my personal experience,I wouldnt recommend our most (two)local Lotus dealers .

Not mentioning any names off course .

Regarding the S2 Elise ,I remember seeing it at the Long Riston petrol station,so probably the same one .
