Bugger! Nuts! Marzipan!

Has any one else managed to sheer the end of the marzipan Lotus wheel nut removal tool (leaving the sheered bit in the bloomin nut) or should I start trying to lift buses and stop trains.

I was using a bloomin torque wrench and everything?

WTF do I do now outside of order another tool…how do I get the broken bit out and will it have damamged the wheel nut or hub?

you mustave eaten all your spinach!

grrrr…(tearing off clothing to reveal rather fetching lycra getup with cloak!)

offending item now removed can anyone tell me the size and type of fitting I need to order one made out of a hard metal from someone who knows how to make tools?

the wheel nuts have 10.9 on the side so am I right in guessing T9 Torx?

I thank you!

I think the wheel bolts are specific to Lotus. The 10.9 refers to the material the bolt is made from (low carbon steel in this case) which means high tensile to take the required torque settings. Standard bolts are usually marked 8.8
Also the’re not Torx, they have six splines. Wheel bolts have ten.

Great to meet you yesterday

Were you drinking Guiness last night?

Guiness, Spinach & IrnBru evidently. And I am surprised to find that the Marzipan tool is the only tool available…not a hardened one or even it would seem a non louts item??..but I can’t believe that is what the motorsports people use or the dealerships for that matter?

But hey…sounds good down the pub…toolbreaker they call me!

Amongst other things

I spoke to my SnapOn man today and he does not think they do a tool for this, but he is going to find out for def. Not tried any other “quality” people like Facom or Mac yet. Might be worth junking the bolts and getting normal hex bolts ?

I believe they are 13mm splined sockets unique to Lotus. I had to get four drilled out on my first Lotus. As long as they are copper greased and torqued properly there usually isnt any problems but i would probably change them to hex bolts to be on the safe side. HTH cheers Ed

Very true Pesky…bothers me you know me so well!!

Mark, thanks for asking EDP…good suggestion.

thanks for the input.

I got a new tool in the interim from JCT so at least I’m not stuck but I think dependant on Marks Snap On guy response I’ll be changing the nuts!

Thanks again!.Jimbers…that’ll be Nutcraker to you Pesky!

A useful trick for helping remove stuck bolts is get an axle stand to stop vertical movement of the tool. Another one ive seen used on stuck bolts is to do it up a tiny amount, just to break the seal, and then undo as normal. I couldnt believe my eyes when i first saw it but it really does work. Hope the above makes sense. Cheers Ed
