Snapped a CV shaft today … the splines going into the gearbox.
Anyone else had this happen ?
John
Most unusual on a Yota. Is that after fitting the LSD?
What were the driving circumstances when it failed?
Only heard of this happening once before, to a guy on scottishelises, a fewmonths back.
sure is Rob…
Did’nt even get me home !
Garage have been on to Lotus motorsport who are also surprised but being helpful …sending out a replacement ASAP…
The bit what failed i,m told is the shaft from the CV to the diff near the splines (although I hav’nt seen this for myself)
It’s going for an Xray tomorrow at a specialist company in Cradley who also do mettallurgy tests on F1 bits
The garage say the metal round where the break was looked a little odd… a ridge of raised ,rough ,uneven stuff !
Surprising for Jap stuff ?
Needless to say I was gutted …
As I sat there motionless I vowed to sell up and go 911 !!!
But for the 30 minutes I had driving , it felt lovely.
Got recovered by the mechanic who did the job and he was gutted also ,he went out in the morning and and gave it some to check out all was well. (pushed quite hard by all accounts)
One of those things I think . Probably been weak for a while and the extra strain of resistance offered with the new diff was the straw that broke the camels back
In no way do I blame the guy who fitted it at all … I really think this one was in no way forseeable.
Glad to hear that you say its rare tho …
Sounds like it’s just pure bad luck, mate, but you’re in good hands to get a speedy fix
PS Are you going to admit to donutting in MaccyD’s, though?
Maccy Dee’s
Blimey … did’nt even get there …
I had just come off nights when the phone rang to say my car was ready…so … off i went in my trusty Golf to collect her …no breakfast needed cos I would be back soon I thought … mmm Big mistake … With all the events of the day i did’nt eat till 7 pm…
Lost 3 Kilos though so thats X Hp I wont be needing anymore … He. he. he.
You gotta laugh or you’d cry
Update:
Had the car back a week now and all seems well .
The break was right at the machining where the retaining ring sits on the shaft .
Not at all torque related as this part of the shaft is right on the inboard end of the splines.
All mystified still
