Ok so it’s not the most intersting of subjects but does anyone else here have an Exige S that doesn’t like to stop? don’t get me wrong it’s fine for slowing you down relatively quickly but when I really stamp on it I get nothing but ABS and what seems like a lifetime to come to a standstill, its got to the point that I’m thinking of uprating to some AP Racing calipers n discs, question is would a slightly bigger disc and 4pot calipers really make a significant difference? surely ABS is to stop the wheels from locking when the various sensors think the tyre is losing traction not the brakes themselves? so perhaps its a tyre issue?
Really just looking for some input on what is a a very tedious subject so any help/advice is greatly appreciated.
I agree with your logic, if the ABS is kicking in then the tyres are losing traction. Ages a go I had similar issues with old A048’s and Mintex pads. Since then I’ve been using 888s which change fairly regularly with higher spec. pads, Performance Friction and now Carbon Lorain. No issues since either on road or track.
Well I am using old A048s front and newer but fairly knackered R888’s rear so perhaps it could be that throwing an inbalance within the ABS system, I only had brand new Pagid pads put on a couple of weeks ago so it shouldnt be them but still with original discs.
I think I might do the Silverstone trackday by which time the tyres on it now will (or should ) be ruined anyway and then have r888’s fitted all round and see how it goes then.
Sounds like knackered tyres combined with good brakes, also if the pads are very new they may not have bedded in fully yet or could be a bit glazed if you’ve not been using them very hard, so you might be getting uneven brake force levels
I’ve got exactly the same problem on my S2 S. I had an 04 NA S2 Exige and although it had the drop in the brake pedal the brakes were truly amazing. Standard pads and standard discs on the original. It’s so frustrating as otherwise the S is an excellent car.
I’ve tried fitting the carbon Lorraine RC6 pads as I mostly do trackdays with the car and they were a disaster. All that did was make the car un drivable on the road as the ABS kicked in all the time and the discs looked like they were going to last about 5 mins.
I’m currently trying to decide what to do next. Am thinking RC5 pads.
The calipers are fine IMHO. Standard discs & pads will last a few hard laps before they go soft and hen you’ll get plenty of brake travel. ABS kicking is in normally to do with tyres or bumpy surfaces.
I uprated my discs to Ali-Bell, Pads to Pagid RS-42 and changed the brake fluid to racing spec and I’ve not managed to get in trouble on track yet.
I’m in the same boat at the moment. I’ve got standard oem discs and pads all round (garage just fitted new rear pads before I bought it) and after getting them warm yesterday when doing some off road circuit testing - they are woeful.
NO initial bite at all, just feel a bit dead and the pedal is a bit too spongy for my liking. I think a major brake overhaul is in order - fluid, braided hoses all round, CL RC5+ pads all round and re-buffed discs ready.
Or… do I just wait a month or two and buy the AP 4 pot kit as per my previous post. I bet a set of CL pads, hoses and fluid will set me back 300, and for the price that seriouslylotus can do me a set of APs inc pads all round, hoses and fluid I might just wait…!
Guys, very soon Im going to be starting to supply some new type of pads to the UK market…
3 variants - Organic, Carbon and Carbon Metallic (road/trackday/race)
I have a set of the CM here to test in the next few weeks, if all goes well I’ll have the first batch of them here in about 3-4 weeks time. With sizes for all calipers.
