Brakes / Pagids?

All,

2 questions:

  1. Is the juddering I experienced on my last track day using stadard Exige S1 brakes/pads probably due to the pads overheating?

  2. If I want to upgrade to Pagids, what is the difference between RS14 and RS42’s, and for me as primary road use with occasional track use, which is the better?

Gracias

Hi Carttman

I experienced similar juddering using the standard Lotus disc & pads as you described after a day at Oulton Park.

I Upgraded the discs (EBC) & pads (RS42) & this was a big improvement.
RS42 great for fast road & light track work IMHO

Just switched to RS14’s & AP Front discs & upgraded brake fluid to Castrol SRF.

Now no juddering/fade etc. Seem fine on the road as well

If you are looking for a decent increase in braking for minimal cost try a set of the RS42 to start with & go from there.

42’s and standard discs were fine for me… and also good on the road.

Have since gone to 14’s which give a bit more bite.

42’s all round with braided hoses and decent fluid would be my choice for road and some track work.

Sounds like you’ve overheated them and now you’ve got uneven pad deposit on the disc. You didn’t leave the handbrake on after you came back to the pits did you? That’ll cause brake judder.

FWIW, I use RS14s on the road and have never found them lacking at all, other than being a bit noisy when they glaze over from lack of hard use… yet to find any fade with them on track use in NZ summer heat. TBH I’d not find a need to go to RS42s on the road, I find the 14s so damned good

Thanks for the feedback gents. I think I’ll be fitting some then B4 my next trackday.

BTW…can’t remember the last time I used the handbrake?!

Does anyone else get the horrendous screeching from RS14’s when they are new and bedding in? This is on Geary’s ali belled disks.

On French Frolics6 last year it was actually embarassing driving through the Villages such was the noise and attention from the locals.

Yes (occasionally).

I understand the Lotus bedding in process is to get them hot/soft by half a dozen hard stops from high speed. Then stand as hard as you can on the pedal for a couple of mins.

Why? Were they shouting 'orrid things about the gay gordons in S2s?

Completely natural… had the same thing for about 2-3 weeks with my RS14s on EBC discs (same as Geary’s but without the Ally bell)… quietened down after that once they’d had a few heat cycles in them.

TBH noisy brakes don’t bother me one bit… in a daily driver they might, but on a wekeend toy it’s a nice change actually

My 14’s screamed like a little bitch until I got them on a track day.

They were the noisiest brakes I’d ever heard - quite liked it although it was a tad embarrassing !

They don’t make a sound now.

I agree they do make a noise and need using hard to get rid of the squeal, but that can be temporary and it can return again on the same set of pads until you use them hard again.
