Brakes on fire

Hi People, had new disks put on last week but they left the pads as they were new last year and there was ‘plenty of meat’ still on them. The disks are nicely bedded in but after a couple of heavy breaking sessions the pedal goes high, i get a vibration through the pedal and steering wheel along with ‘rumbling’ noise. After letting the brakes cool even for a few minutes, the braking is back and the pedal feels normal again. It is as if the fluid has boiled, BUT how can just new disks cause a problem i did not have before. Garage is recommended new pads even though they were new last year and new fluid. Ideas??

What discs, what pads & what fluid?

Re: Brakes on fire

Garage is recommended new pads even though they were new last year.

So they’re at least 9 months old, not exactly spring chickens then. New pads are a good idea for new discs because the old pads may be shaped to your old discs… so when used against new discs the pads may not touch evenly across the disc … which isn’t going to help them bed in nicely.

If I were to have a wild stab in the dark on the disk/pad/fluid combo, I’d say Eliseparts / RS15 / Dot4.1

I think that may be the only option. The disks are brand new but the pads were replaced last year so i think it is a lack of compatibility even though they still look as good as new. The dealer suggested DOT 5 for a fluid change, any thoughts?

What is the combination of parts you are using? This can be very relevant no matter how new or old they are.

Basically they were fitted by the dealer and are all official Lotus parts form the Exige manual, they are not fitting anything aftermarket.

That’ll be your problem then.

  • RS14 pads
  • AP/ALCON disks (295mm at the front)
  • SRF fluid

It’ll be a whole new world.

I agree with Ian!!

AP/ALCON disks (295mm at the front)

on whose bells?

Well personally AndyD’s but I guess anything quality that excepts them.

Ian

The Alcon discs fit the ap bells i believe.

AP dont make Bells - but yes the hole pattern is the same for the 295 disk AP or ALcon

Overkill IMHO.

Decent pads, Pagids or SBS
Decent discs, no need to go for AP ones.
Decent fluid, Castrol 5.1 is enough, SRF is not needed.

I’d check what pads they have fitted as most Lotus dealers stock non Std ones. If they are green dump them.

Are Andy’s available for purchase, I just thought he had posted some drawings?

Mark that overkill statement proves you must wear a blouse!!! lol That spec is the least I would want for a spirited track day drivers car. IMHO it needs 4 pots up front the fronts on the back and some serious pads!!! lol

But then maybe I am the girl using the brakes to much.

I seem to recall Maddog was taking up the mantle, may be wrong though.

Who makes the bells that ap discs are delivered with?

I ordered the ap5000 ap discs and bells from eliseparts.

The pic showing it being used with a two piston caliper is exactly how the discs and bells i recieved look.

You must be using the brakes too much

My car runs SBS pads (as recommended by Steve Guglielmi), Castrol 5.1 and Ally belled discs front and rear. (Front are Mutts nuts bells with Brembo rotors and the rears are Geary’s ones).
Never had fade with this set-up, and I do tend to press on a bit .

Fully agree here (but not with the girly statements )

I am running PF type 93 compound brake pads, Mutts Nuts disks and bells all around (295F & 285R) and, ahem! ducting.
No Fade, no problems and I’m known to be hard on the brakes.

(but to be fair, the plenum ducting always helped a lot)

Castrol SRF would really be overkill when Castrol Pesponse plus (5.1) does the job…
But I know, some people like the best, and the best is SRF.
