Brakes 2 or 4....?

To cut along story short…away last week ended up spending a lot of time with a guy who competes a fair bit in the Jag XJS series… great cars btw and yes the legend lives on!

Mods were the topic of conversation leading to brakes vs. unsprung weight of which I’ve removed a fair bit. He suggested that if the car stops good, of which I believe without the long term experience my car does (st Exige but 200bhp) why add weight? That’s kind of where I am…why change?

Not sure what you are asking

Not sure what you are asking

Is an upgrade from 2 to 4 pot calipers worth the additional weight penalty…assuming that the 4 pots are actually heavier!

With the right pads/discs and technique, I really don’t think you need 4-pots.

Look at Gav in LOT last year… standard calipers and didn’t do so bad !

That’s where I’m at Dave. I’ve fitted a new exhaust, manifold etc, c/f here and there some engine mods but next I’d like to do something with the brakes…or would I, just don’t know?

I’ve put a lot of effort into reducing weight and the car does stop very well, can’t complain. But the majority of the time you mention bigger brakes and the replies are stupidly positive!!! This guy knew his stuff, well experienced and I found his difference of opinion interesting so as a matter of debate…What would most of you do, go for a bigger brake system, if so what make, what pads? Or stay with standard, if so what pads and apart from the hoses and fluid, is there anything else that can be done?

Maybe the fact that his Jags weight might make up for two Exiges is it more relevant on a lighter or heavy a car? A number a factors to be taken into account here I know but hey2 or 4 (thanks Steve).

People who have spend over 1k on some nice shiny new calipers are hardly going to say it wasn’t money well spent though.

Unless you are having problems, I honestly wouldn’t touch it…that money would be better spent on a Don Palmer day or Walshy tuition…

IMHO of course !

What does the best possible 2 pot S2 brake set up consist of?

I used larger Tarox grooved and cross-drilled discs, Ferodo 2500 pads with larger swept area and simple cooling ducts.

I certainly don’t find the brakes to be the weak link in my case (as in most) that’s the driver!

But the AP 4-pot set-up is not that heavy just questionable if it is necessary…

What does the best possible 2 pot S2 brake set up consist of?

AP 304 MM disks

braided hoses

rs42 pads.

Imho.

but I would fit these aswell if your car is over weight a little
