Brake wear indicators

This is something I feel I should know/remember, but where is the indicator on the pads and disks to indicate when they should be changed? It serves me right for owning bulletproof Japanese cars, maintained by the company. I haven’t done any real hands-on car work since my brown Ford Escort (the colour worked better than any security device!). Cheers, Ian [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif[/image] (or [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/frown.gif[/image] if I need new brakes)

pads minimum of 2.5mm of material, disks 24.9mm minimum thickness

TaAre calipers therefore the only way? No grooves or lines on the pads, cut to the lowest point?Ian

There is a cut out on the pads but to see these i think you need to take them out !!So it’s all down to visual inspection in the first instance, the discs will need to be measured.

Just checked my old Lotus pads, they had fallen behind a cupboard so couldn’t check before. The fronts do not have any slots but the rears do, so it’s wheels off and visual inspection, you should be able to see and guesstimate the thickness remaining.

Ta PhilAnybody know where I can get a cheap/good enough set of calipers? If the wheels are coming off, I’d at least like to be accurate!Ian [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif[/image]

[answer my own question]…here’s a pair for 1.50! http://www.engineeringsupplies.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=3539 Anybody got any pointers on calipers (the measuring type rather than the braking type)?Ian [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif[/image]

Those are fine, i have a set (there plastic) which i use for measuring dirty oily bits, i have another metal set with dial guage on for the clean stuff !! Cant go wrong for 1.50 !!!If you every fancy a trip up the A34 let us know, we can park your car in my garage and i’ll strip it for you, then you put it back together [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/wink.gif[/image][This message has been edited by Phil Davies (edited 04 August 2002).]
