So its the fuel that’s doin’ it… I have noticed my car doing this recently on occasion - I use BP a lot - and have wondered what it’s all about… My car has never done this before not with the ECU upgrade nor before I got it done…
What’s the theory on it? Is it simply that we aren’t burning all th efuel ??
I presume this is on over-run, and caused by unburnt fuel igniting in the exhaust…
Higher octanes are, I think, used to delay detonation and stop pinking, so can it be that your ignition is being delayed too long ??
Perhaps some of the fuel is being exhausted before it can ignite…
Mine used to bang crackle and pop before the emerald, but since… not a pop!!

But the beauty of the Emerald is that you can make it sound like a machine gun on overrun, just set the ignition timing to zero degrees on load site 0 above 2500 rpm’s
