Bootlid 'stops'

On the inside of the S2 bootlid are two bolts that screw into the lid and have rubber bungs on the end which act as stops/levellers for when the boot is shut.

One of mine needs adjusting barely a fraction but it seems like the captive nut or rivnut or whatever is used inside the boot lid is just spinning in its hole. Does anyone have an idea if these are accessible without cutting bits of the bootlid out? There’s some black plastic rain gutter trim just above where they would be so not sure if that can be popped out to provide access?

This is a niggle which barely registers on the niggle register so I won’t be doing anything too disruptive to sort it, but if there’s an easy way to get in there and replace with some new rivnuts or whatever then I’d perhaps have a look.

There should be a flange bolt, washer, and nut, the nut acts as a lock. If you undo the nut, the bolt should screw in and out.
Failing that the bolt has seized in the bobbin and its turning, option is to remove boot lid and carefully drill out bolt.

Yeah the lock nut comes undone fine, but whatever the flange nut is screwed into is just spinning in the clam.

If I were to cut the flange bolts off and drill them out… I’m not sure what options I’d have for refitting something new as I can’t work out the anatomy of the bootlid. Need a volunteer to chop theirs in half and show me a cross section

No of you drill it out and the re-tap the thread so its clean and screws i am sure the friction will stop the bobbin spining.

Was the original bobbin bonded in do you know? Might be an option to reglue it if the hole in the fibreglass is opened out a bit I suppose.

I’ll leave it for now, it’s not causing an issue - just something for the OCD to address later… In my experience there’s more to lose by attempting to drill out bolts than there is to gain in a case like this!

Awwww no Kyle… more sleepless nights… you and lee must both have plenty of them lol…

@lee, when you getting that underside as clean as Europa was?

There are a few things stopping me from sleeping at night… luckily the car is currently not one of them!

I’d add a spacer under the rubber bumper or fix something to the clam. Another worthwhile fix is to add fill the void in the rubber to stop flex, I think I used washer fluid hose

Cheers Ade, I found some boot bump stops on eBay which come from various era’s of 911 which look to be similar dimensions but much deeper. They were pennies so I ordered some to see if I can make something work with them.

My two threaded ‘stops’ are about 3mm different to each other, the OS one being the longest, but I actually think that’s the correct height. The NS one is screwed in ‘all the way’ and I believe to be too short - so if I can swap the rubber buffer from that with something 3mm deeper… then I’m onto a winner. Alternatively some sort of self adhesive pad on the clam down below would also work.

When you say “fill the void” do you mean ramming something into the buffer when it’s stuck onto the threaded post? Struggling to visualise exactly what you mean.
