Boiling Brake Fluid

After playing last weekend my brakes have been spongey, i bled them today which cured the worst of the problem for about five miles! Just been advised that if i have boiled the fluid then it all needs replacing. Braded hoses are on order! Anyone else have the same problem? Can you get upgraded fluid?
Oh its an S2.
Gav

I’d be very suprised if you have boiled the fluid.

At the moment i cant see any other reasons, nothing obvious, no leaks, pads ok etc.

what pads are you running?

Gav

Best fluid is Castrol SRF - costs (officially) about 43 a tin.

Braided hoses are definately a must too, but rumour has it that for an S2 it’s a front clam removal job

See you at Anglesey next Sat?

standard at the moment cos the motorsport werent available although they are now. I admit i do drive on the brakes and have fried pads before but never had this problem. That inc on my elise s1, s2 etc

Cheers pesky, my mate who rallies has suggested the castrol, rvl quoted three hours and they did russels last week, so they should know!! he he

I didn’t notice you mentioned it was an S2… don’t know anything about those so I may be wrong. Russ T would be the man to ask.

Are you sure that Russ’s fronts have been done, cos the last I heard only the rears had been

any help is much appritiated! its just a problem ive not encountered before! and as pesky said im meant to be at anglesy sat so am pushed for time to get it sorted!

…but never had this problem. That inc on my elise s1, s2 etc

Yeah, but now you’re driving a lardy S2 Elise Coupe

PS See ya on Weds

oh, dont know about that? you may be right, im just going of what the new parts guy at rvl was saying, which i obviously wouldnt take as gospel

thanks for that dad!dont forget the aircon, leccy windows!!! he he

Does the pedal creep if you keep pressure on it? Or if you put light pressure on it does it go spongy?

If so then it’s the Master Cylinder on it’s way out…

…But just so you know I’ve boiled my brakes on the last 2 trackdays I’ve done I really need to open the front vents and duct air to the fronts!!!

I don’t know how but I guess 3 20 minute sessions with about 5 mins between each one at bedford wouldn’t help

cant say ive notided it creeping but i wasnt loking! three times! that cheers me up!

if your pushed for time – just get the fluid replaced and make sure they are bled properly… plenty info around but elise FAQ is a good place to start… you really need to remove the front calipers and invert them while bleeding to get all the air out of the link between pistons.

Bleed the rears first.

And if doing it on your own you’ll need an eazibleed or similar pressure bleeder. (Malafords for about 15 )

Hi Gav.

LRV sold me the hoses but I got them fitted - the fronts are a clam off job. I would change the pads to RS14s & fluid to SRF, that will make it better but not perfect, due servo assistance.

cheers russ, out of interest why are the fronts a clam off job?

cheers russ, out of interest why are the fronts a clam off job?

Cos you can’t get to the “inside” fixing point, which is at the opposite end of the hose to that which fits to the caliper

I reckon that it’s a 3 hour job (fitting/bleeding)fronts & rears, without front clam removal, so on an S2 it must be 4 to 5 hours - @ 55 plus vat per hour - ouch

temp replaced the fluid with castrol response dot 4 yesterday and hey presto, brakes and everything! cheers.
Now for planning a proper solution.
