BMW E39 M5 advice

Ive always been a fan of this particular model and I need a family barge, i have been considering changing the exige for an Evora, but im worried about the depreciation on them ATM, hence thinking keep the exige
and get an M5 they are seriously cheap thesedays.

I would have a max budget of 10k and am going to do plenty of research and perhaps get one after xmas, so does anyone know anything about them? anyone had one?

Im not bothered about fuel costs really as it wont do too many miles.

cheers.

Yeah had two in the family, an early one and a late one. Differences were:

  • Early (2000 iirc) car had low tention piston rings, so drank more oil
  • Later cars gained a oil pump for the head, made it less clattery at startup & idle
  • Strong cars but clutch is the weak point, check for slipping regardless of miles
  • Brakes can be a tad weak, not an issue on the road though but change fluid
  • Vanos can be chattery, but doesn’t mean it’s buggered
  • Early car had a duff vanos seal that can allow oil to be sucked into the manifold, check for blue smoke.
  • Check the self dimming mirrors work, the glass is silly money.
  • Oh common that the dash letters start to have dead pixels.
  • MAF filters cause all kinds of fun with regards to performance.

Deffo buy on condition rather than age or miles, however these cars are comparatively bullet proof if they have all the stamps. Munich legends are my dealer of choice, although Barney has moved on I think.

On final thing, get a loud exhaust, they sound like a 520i without one.

I love them and was thinking about one too…but I had packaging issues getting three kid seats in :frowning:

Mike Nunan from here has one, see if you can get hold of him.

There’s still a cracking E34 at 4starclassics and even E60’s are becoming bargains now…

Thats some great info many thanks for that

E39 is the star of the M5s imho

however the E60s do look like bargains now, especially if you beat the tax with a 05 one. Not sure I’d take one over a RS4 though

I agree - in a couple of years I plan to get an RS4 Avant and keep it.

Mrs Muu likes the RS4, she hated the width of the M

down side with em all is no tow option, so trailing the lotus is a no no.

NOT fond memories of being beaten with a baseball bat over the head for the keys…garage it/be careful/be vigilant. I’ll never own an RS product ever again despite it being a true beauty :frowning:

yeah Mrs Muu and I disagree on the point on where to keep keys. She keeps them in a pot in the bedroom, I’d rather have them in the hallway.

However she rule the roost.

I was leaving work Tim, pulling the shutters down when it happened. The M3 was at fecking home…

I am looking at changing my every day dog barge. My 530d has 72k on it now, so want to sell before it gets too leggy.

I have been looking at M5 and RS6 estates. I am steering more towards an RS6 as I dont like the M5 gearbox. I have had two SMG M3’s and they aren’t the greatest as an every day proposition and an RS6 has the best part of 600bhp which is obviously required now we have two dogs!

RS4’s are bloody small inside. I looked at those when I bought my 530 BM.

Jonny, thats insane but I suppose alarms are too clever these days to not have the keys.

Yeah SMG box is a tad crap, especially if you live in a city. Once tried a slow hill start in a M3 and it was like a learner had the clutch.

RS4 is small, thats half the appeal really. The V10 S6 is a bargain if you dont want the cost of the RS, much more subtle too.

I know everyone ravs about them but i stupidly bought an e39 m5 purely based on all the glowing journo reports and it was a big disappointment with dead steering feel, dull exhaust note and high running costs and crucially for me it never actually felt that fast. After driving a friends e60 M5 it felt much the same just a bit quicker, still very clinical though and not that exciting. Neither model give that feeling of driving anything very special which I think is crucial.

Lol, I ended up driving my '60s fiat 500 to work and leaving the M5 on the drive everyday…no one could understand it but to me the little fiat was a million times more fun.

RS6 all day long.

exhaust notes I’ll accept, getting a aftermarket one on there is a must.

Steering and braking, I’d seriously question any audi bar the B7 RS4 would be better.

Running costs, 10k 400hp car wont be cheap to run as a 325i. But no other 4 door car will squat and charge up a motorway for 10k like a M5.

As you can tell I’m a fan. Would i own one now? Hmmm possibly not as one money pit is enough at the moment.

Cheers for all the input guys, some interesting points.

One downer for me is I asked Matt @ Henderson Taylor if he could insure an E39 M5 on a limited mileage policy similar to my exige as it would only be used as the family weekend runaround so 3k per year max, but they can not insure a 4 door car :frowning:((

Does anyone know if one would qualify for a classic policy(as most r 10 years old now) or any other useful insurers.

Thanks

Thats a kicker, tried adrian flux and HIC?

T

Thanks never heard of HIC will give them a shout.

Just tried adrian flux and wait for it…

61095!!!

Thats for a 3k per year. Garaged. 3rd car. 30 year old.
All my no claims are tied up on other cars.

Hic have not called me back yet.

Anyone know anyone else that maybe do modern classic or second car policies?

61,095 for insurance!!!

Wow, properly insuring man!!!

LOL, might have accidentally added a 0

Getting somewhere now HIC seem to have found me a good quote, they are going to call me back tomorrow to confirm.
