Like you I never do it, completely pointless in my eyes! If some one wants to nick your car they will. It is different if you are giving out your full name, D.O.B and address.
Privacy reasons. In Switzerland, as I’m sure it is in other countries, it’s relatively easy to get to the address of the owner of the car by knowing his number plate.
I really don’t need people I don’t know personally off the internet being able to find out things about me through the number plate.
My view is still that if some one wants to nick my car then they will do it any way! If they can brake in to my garage, dissconect the house alarm, remove my dust cover, take the optimiser of the battery, acctually get in it and start it first time and beat the tracker unit, with out me hearing or scaring them off, then they can have it!
Every time you go out in your car, you must be worried who is looking at your plate, noithing to worry out in my opinion

Great, thanks for that. I’ll be round at 2am first time you’re out
Blanking out Number Plates??? Mmmm… if your car is on finance anyone can do a hpi check using your reg number to possibly find out how much chucky you owe
mine is DKO5CYG
I thought it was for cloning/ringing. I.E. someone with another blue exige could copy your plate then would be relatively free to go through speed/congestion cameras without fear of reprisal. Even if a copper thought it was driving a bit strangely and so ran your plate it would come up unstolen and blue, so they probably wouldn’t stop it.
The estimate for cars on false plates in london was 1 in 250
a couple years back, maybe more now.
I’d have thought they’d just go to a garage myself, plenty to choose from there.
that is a good point never thought about that! I can see that happing a lot with common car’s like exiges, but with rare cars like 340R it would be harder to do
The only time it seems to make sense, is if pix are taken at track event and insurance doesn’t quite stretch that far.
I think insurance companies have got a little wiser to this sort of thing with the growth of trackdays.
You’d certainly be in a heap of trouble if you got caught doing this; and what’s more I’d think there would probably be a few people at trackdays who might feel disposed to report you if it was known you were going to do this after an accident. In some senses, taping up your plate could almost be seen as a precuror to defrauding an insurance company.
On a separate note - and I now appear as guilty as everyone else recently - where are all the propoer threads about our cars gone? Somebody post something interesting with photos…please
