My car has the super sports pack which includes a set of 1-way adjustable Bilstein dampers.
They are great for road use as is but the springs are way too soft for track work.
Question is if the basic quality of the dampers is good and it is all a matter of valving and spring rates, or if it is better to just replace them with something else?
Thanks.
I was probably a bit unclear in my first post.
Should have said: Is the basic damper design any good?
If it is it can perhaps be revalved and have new springs to achieve the same perf as one way Nitrons or Quantums etc.
The Bilsteins (the shocks my car came with) are junk… when compared to currently what is available. The best shocks for the Lotus are Quantums (my personal first choice), Nitrons (what I have on my car right now and very happy with them) and (Penskes - but only if you’re in the United States).
Mine were 2 way adjustable bilsteins, height and rebound.Red springs and canisters on the front shocks.
Are these the shocks you have,if so once adjusted they are ok for the odd trackday. But if you use your car on track often most people seem to prefer Ohlins as they are better for road and track.
Thanks guys.
I know there are better options our there, and being Swedish I of course have a sweet spot for Öhlins.
But do you know why the Bilsteins (remote canister version) is junk, is it the damper design or the way it has been set up?
I kind of assume that Bilstein has the knowhow to design a very good damper, but there could be good reasons (cost) not to.
On track I have found that 9 rear, 7 front, and arb in pos 4 goves me a balance I like.
Then I just wind them back 5 steps for road use.
Did you also adjust the ride height?
I did with mine for track, 20mm front and 15mm on the rear. I then had a GEO done and some front shims removed for camber.
This did make quite a difference on track.
Yes, I have done about the same.
Camber shims removed.
As low as possible up front and +5mm at the rear.
Ride height and Geo done with 1/2 tank and my weight in the drivers seat.
Still, it is too softly sprung and without having tried other dampers on it I have a feeling that dampening could be improved.
Question is if it is worth spending money on the Bilsteins (new springs and revalving) or if it is better to sell them and buy something else.
Simply, can they become as good as Nitron, Quantum etc. single way dampers?
Probably best to sell them and buy a more track orientated damper, as it seems you would prefer a more track focus set up. It might not be worth spending your money on new valving and springs, but just buy a proven set up
I found the adjustable Bilsteins a great road damper and came as part of the touring pack, or was it super touring pack
